Cheap cars to Insure

I'm 17 and male so I'm probably paying the most out of any other group to have my car insured. Can anyone advise on a small-ish car that would be relatively cheap for me to insure. I'm also considering doing "Pass Plus" as in my area money from speed camera fines is going to anyone who applies for Pass Plus before the summer to get a £100 discount (if it makes any difference).

Thanks, Joe.

You want to really look at cars like

    Ford Ka
    Fiat Punto 1.2 8v (not 16v)
    Toyota Yaris
    Peugeot 106/Citroen Saxo 1.1
    Renault Clio 1.2

Have a look for a Parkers guide, it tells you the insurance groups of all cars. They have a website too. You want to aim to get group 4 or below for your age really!!

Yup, different insurers use different "groupings" but the parker guide is a good enough starting place... the lower the number the cheaper the insurance.

Very sorry Joe but I think at your age you will find it difficult to find "relatively cheap" insurance. My hubby has a cousin who's insurance premium at 18 was over £1000 for a Citroen AX  Of course ever year this was reduced as he gained a NCD.

We also have the same problem with my neice who is 17 this year. I've said I will buy her a car but she (which translates as my brother :rotfl: ) will have to insure it. Again he is looking at a price of over £1000 to insure her for an old fiesta!

Is the pass plus the old advanced driving test? If it is then this should help with the premiums but I think you are pretty much stuck with very high prices until you get a bit older.

    Plato ;) Make £2018 in 2018 no. 37 - total = £1626.25/£2018 :j
  • I was in a similar predicament, in the end decided to split the cost with my girlfriend and share a car (we go everywhere together mostly anyway) and have her as the primary driver. Direct line gave us the best quote by far of £729 for the both of us including legal cover. (We will both get NCD with them I think as well). So we pay £350 each and also share the cost of petrol. I'm 19 and she is 17, but having her as the primary driver is much cheaper.

Any car < 1.6 litre will be cheaper on insurance, we got a 95 1.2 litre Renault Clio :)

The cheapest cars to insure tend to be small engined non-Japanese cars. Something like a Corsa 12v. The lower the car value, the cheaper it will be to insure too. Do less miles and the premium goes down too. Some insurance companies will give you discounts for having a good alarm/immobiliser fitted. Also, if you can find a garage to park it in, that will also make a difference.

Thanks for the advice of those above.
I was expecting to pay >£1000 for my insurance, and my friends were telling me of them paying about £1000-£1400, yet I was using Confused.com and it was giving me about £1800-ish for a Toyota Yaris & a Ford Ka, I'm trying Directline as my friend got a Vauxhall on it for £1400.
I've been riding a motorbike (/moped) for a year and I have a year's no claims, are there any insurers out there that take this NC, or is it for cars only?

It would be good to get yourself as a named driver on someone else's policy for at least a year with Direct line then you will be given a year NCD (only for Direct line policies) and if you stay for 2 years as a named driver you will get 2 years NCD - assuming you don't crash :D

One thing I learned in life was that every year you add 1 NCD to your track record and every year if you phone around enough insurers you will always find one that is significantly cheaper than your renewal.

Regarding 'power plus' i'd first ring up the insurers to see if you will get a discount it you passed. My sister was in a similar position to yours and found that few insurers will give discount if you took power plus
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D
