Not Again!! Chipped Windscreen

  • Well till I used to work locally (within few miles of home) I had maybe a windscreen in 6-7 years? But then when I started my longer commute which includes fast A roads and about 4 (short) motorway junctions I got about 6 (including this) windscreens in 4 years. During the snowy periods last year I had a chip which cracked straight away from a salt lorry in front of me (single lane - fair distance not up his rear) got it changed and after two weeks got another crack!!!
Funnily enough (and Im going to jinx myself here) I only had 1 puncture in 4 years in the same commute.

I agree surely the state of the roads are causing more chips. Next time Ill go straight to the repair stand (even if I have to travel a bit for it or take a couple of hours off work!)
Is just so frustrating, I call my husband and say guess what?? And he knows! At first I got the windscreen replaced straight away as it was a bit of a novelty and was uncomfortable driving with a chip but now I m more 'relaxed' about it and dont rush to repair it straight away if is safe. Is it legal though?
My car was first reg in JAN 09 so that means that I will need to change it in Jan the latest (if nothing happens before then!) before the MOT!

I've only ever had one chip turn into a crack, that was in the passenger corner, and it eventually grew across the screen, then turned back onto intself and finshed on the passenger A pillar.
Eventually I changed it for the MOT.
Another chip on a different car was fine, until I got another one about six inches up, and one night they joined up, and some months later cracked bottom to top.

I don't usually bother getting them fixed though, but one I've filled with aralidite, that's lasted 2 years now. (no windscreen cover on that car)
  • aralidite? Which one specifically? Didnt know it could be done DYI... Can you only apply it on a chip or on cracks as well? I might give it a go on my windscreen as a test just before I get it replaced :)

    Alradite rapid.

Once you fill the chip with it though, you can't do anything else with it.
