Not Again!! Chipped Windscreen

I m having an average of 2 windscreens replacement a year! I cant believe my luck (or lack of it!)
It happened always on my commute from / to work and sometime even if I dont have cars to my right or in front (but have a joining slip road on the left) or if I was in the outside lane it once came from the opposite side!!! Another time as I was overtaking a lorry!!
I know is not my driving as 9/10 I was within the speed limit!
It's soo annoying and expensive! :(
Also the last two times once in June and then again two days ago, it was just a little chip that could have been repaired but by the morning after it had a long crack and they never repair it before 2 or 3 days!
Is this normal??? I dont think I can prevent it but wondered what you thought or if you have similar experiences

  • Our local Tesco has a man who repairs chips ! Does yours ? I think the chip goes to a crack as the car cools down overnight.

I've been lucky, the chips never normally turn into cracks too quickly.
I usually wait until I have three or four chips, or until they do eventually join up, or until it fails the mot. (Last one was a two foot crack, they insisted I change the screen)

My experience is there seems to be more bits of the road flying up to meet my windscreen (or bodywork) these days. In 18 years of drivings, me and Mrs Shim had only 1 chip in the windscreen each. The current car (we only have one between us now) has had 4 chips in the last two years, plus numerous 'dunks' to the bodywork as we hear stones hitting the car. It's like the road's literally falling apart in front of us.

Never even had a chip in a windscreen but ive had other things appen to the car on a more expensive scale.
  • I had one chip repaired last year, stone thrown up by overtaking a lorry. If the councils and road people swept the roads more we wouldnt have this problem. I have suffered from two punctures this year from screws or nails in tyres. Really pigged me off. put it down to the builders yard near me leaving stuff on the road outside their enclosure. Yesterday turning out of my street saw broken glass right in centre of road, seems youths are doing it on purpose when they use the road as a race track at night.

wait till a wheel nut comes from the opposite carriageway on a motorway comes towards you and you see it in slow motion as it comes straight through the laminated screen like a bullet
    i kept it for ages
you then realise how mortal you are and dont worry about chips
ps my truck screen was busted about 2 months ago and will need a screen for its mot in march ,i havent had it replaced as i know it will get hit again (martians law 1954 wyoming) http://www.scientificamerican.com/gallery_directory.cfm?photo_id=8335AAA1-0016-8D03-B7185AC47C9101E4

Never had to replace a windscreen, but I did have two stones hit my windscreen on the same day just a few hours apart! I think one left a chip and one didn't. I don't believe Gavin from Autoglass because I've been driving around with chips on my windscreen for years and they've never got any worse.

Last time it happened to me I heard a bang/boing while driving along but thought I'd been lucky as no signs of damage, until the following morning when the crack appeared, growing from just above the wiper blade.

Windscreen cover has proven to be worth the money.

Yeah, just bad luck. Get them fixed anyway, they may or may not get worse, but it doesn't cost much. On most insurance its only a tenner excess for a repair, no brainer really.

But it does count as a claim on your insurance, (which won't affect your ncd) and if you need to cancel means you will get no refund normally. So I wouldn't unless I really had to.
