Ipad WiFi connection problem

Had IPad 2 for 6 weeks, things going smoothly. This week, it keeps disconnecting from my SKy WiFi. My PC is OK and my phone. After a bit of googling, I've found that this seems to be a fault with this IPad & Apple is aware of it. Today, I've renewed the licence as Apple advised, butt there are a few other things on their support page which I really dont understand, like updating the firmware of the router??????? And changing from WAP to Wep ( or other way round!!!!) I'm a bit of a dinosaur in this feild, so has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it? My router is about 6 yrs old and never had any problems wiith it.

When it 'disconnects', is it still showing as connected to wifi, but you can't access the internet? That's the problem I was having with this iPad 2 at my mother's house:

I know there is nothing wrong with the wifi at my mother's house, as my sister uses it for her laptop, and I know there is nothing wrong with the iPad 2, it stays connected to the wifi at my house (and it's a Virgin cable internet connection with a Virgin supplied modem/router at both houses).
I never got to the bottom of the problem though.
If you post the make and model of your router someone will be able to tell you how to update the firmware, and how to switch encryption type/mode/standard/protocol (not sure what the correct terminology is!).0 -
If it is a similar thing to the ipod touch, if I switch the unit off without switching wifi off, it causes my router to require a power reset.0

I do switch it off without turning WiFi off, I'll try doing it that way. The main problem is that sometimes I can switch IPad on and it connects straight away, but as I'm using it, it suddenly disconnects. Sometimes though, it just wont connect even when switching on. My router is SKY broadband- Sagam. There doesn't appear to be any model number on it, unless I'm just not recognising it. Can anyone talk me through updating it in basic instructions. ie, "Updating for Dummies". I cant understand why the IPad worked fine for a few weeks, then started playing up. Also, if my router is 6 yrs old, should SKY replace it? & if so, will they charge?:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

You maybe wise to assign a designated IP address for your iPad.
I have 7 devices all accessing my router wirelessly, the problem can occur that some devices can cause IP to change. If you assign a designated IP via the routers advanced settings it will always have the same IP and no other piece of equipment can 'take it'.
Login via 192.168.0.1
then under LAN IP set up (or similar), you enter the MAC address of the iPad and give it an IP in the desgnated range 192.168.0.3 (for example)
You will find your connection far more stable and reliable.
I have done this on both my current Virgin SUper Hub and previous Sky / Netgear router0 -
TazR, I've had a go at this in Tools, Internet Options, connections, LAN settings, but not sure where to go from there. Where will I find my Ipad MAC address & then where do I type it in?:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Did I log in to the router correctly? ie TOOLS- INTERNET OPTIONS-CONNECTIONS-LAN SETTINGS?:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

no you log into a router by typing (most likely) 192.168.1.1 into your browsers address barI do switch it off without turning WiFi off, I'll try doing it that way. The main problem is that sometimes I can switch IPad on and it connects straight away, but as I'm using it, it suddenly disconnects. Sometimes though, it just wont connect even when switching on. you shouldn't really need to turn the ipad off, normally you would just tap the top button once to 'sleep' it.
to update the ipad just connect it to itunes and click update, that in itself could solve the problem,
you could try 'forgetting' the network and then reconnecting see if that fixes it.
otherwise if you 'restore' your ipad using itunes may also fix it (make sure you back up the ipad so you don't loose all your settings and data). then restore from backup.0 -
What model router do you have, or who is your ISP (internet service provider)
You log in to your router using (windows explorer), ie an internet page, but in the address bar instead of typing www.blahblah.co.uk, you type a IP address, the address to your router, normally something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
Once logged in it will ask for a username and password, once entered there will be a field on the left like LAN IP SETUP...its hard to say unless i know the router.
If you can give me your router details and service provider i should be able to help a bit more.0 -
Sorry, just noticed you have Sky, so assume you have netgear?
If so then do this;
Firstly the URL Address for the config page is http://192.168.0.1
When you first connect to the config page it will ask for a username and password!- The Default Username for the Sky router is : admin
- The Default Password for the Sky router is : sky
- Navigate to LAN IP SET UP
- Click add under address reservation
- On the screen that appears choose the device you want to give a fixed IP to
- Select with the radio button to the left
- Change the IP if you want/need to
- Click add
- Click cancel to return to the main screen
- Click apply
The device will now always receive that IP address.0 -
TazR, I have followed your clear and consise instructions. Will see now if the problem is soved. Thankyou very much
