Wrong meter point reference number
Options
I moved into a new flat build about 3 years ago.I continued with the same gas supplier British Gas which the builder was using.I have since changed the supplier a number of times. My present supplier Eon has now told me that the MPR number being used belonged to another flat and that number is the one that was also used by the other suppliers and also British Gas.EON says that they will refund me all monies paid by me for gas usage. What happens now?Do I have to do anything and what is my liability?

If Eon have identified that they were billing you for the incorrect MPRN, they should be able to tell you the correct MPRN and who is registered as the supplier for that MPRN. You then need to contact the correct supplier and set up an account with them. Once Eon refund you, you can use the money to pay the correct supplier.0

You'll be charged at the current suppliers rates rather than Eons, so it might be slightly more. If you've been with other suppliers prior to Eon, I imagine they have billed you for the wrong supply as well and you may need to contact them in turn to get a refund. Its a bit of a messy situation and none of it is your fault, but it may take a while to sort out...0

Does some sort of 12 month back dating rule apply here?
No, not unless you informed the supplier of their error and they failed to act. (and you can prove it)
You will be billed for what you used, and refunded for what you didn't use.
So you might be due a small windfall if you have been paying for energy you haven't been using.
Or you may find you owe a small fortune because the real user of the meter you have been billed against were more frugal than you. This is typically how such errors get discovered, because someone complains they are being billed too much for what they are using. i.e. the other user was being billed for what you were using and didn't like the cost."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

That is very generous of Eon. I don't believe they are obliged to refund the last 12 months of consumption. Very strange.
First of all correctly identifying the MPRN is not your responsibility. Nor was it ever your responsibility to register the MPRN. This issue happens frequentlly with new build flats. Your responsibility (to the energy supplier) is simply to set up an energy account quoting your name and correct address. BTW are there any problems with the postcode for the block?
While it is true the supplier a MPRN is registered to can be determined, the issue for the supplier is to determine the correct MPRN registered to your flat. I really don't know why Eon isn't taking ownership of the issue. I'm not going to speculate further because the Eon board monitors are usually on the ball.
The main responsibility you have is to yourself to first of all put some funds aside every month against the day you *may* be sent a bill. Secondly to keep on top of the organisations whose responsibility it is to resolve this issue. Enless they have a very good excuse that is currently Eon.
If the MPRN is incorrectly registered there is nothing you can do.0 -
I wouldn't have thought so as this is usually for billing errors. In this instance, a supplier has been supplying your gas for a while but has never charged you for it. I'd probably speak to Consumer direct if you do get landed with a huge bill for some proper advice. Ultimately, I would imagine that British Gas arranged the installations at all the flats in the block and they must accept some responsibility for the mix up.
Usage wise, even though you have been billed for the wrong MPRN, I would imagine you were being billed based on the meter readings on the correct meter so this shouldn't make a difference.0 -

I don't agree with that though maybe we are splitting hairs. A MPRN registration error is an industry fault and absolutely nothing to do with the customer. A basic Billing Code qualifying issue.
Of course the customer should be receiving regular bills and either implicitly accepting estimated readings or submitting customer reads.
For the customer it is a meter (reading) issue not an MPRN issue. I have no idea whether or not the correct meter is being read. And (unless I missed it) we haven't even mentioned the meter serial number.
Something for the customer to check.0 -

Jalexa, Eon have identified that they are not the supplier and never have been. Therefore their only obligation is to refund any payments (I assure you that this is an obligation and not generosity) and point the direction to the correct supplier...
Eon will then track down the who they are actually supplying and hit them with a big bill.0
