smartphone mostly for calls and emails, possibly music?

hi there, any advice for a smartphone newbie? the important things to me are:

low costs both monthly and upfront
reasonable amount of free voice minutes and texts
i don't need lots of data (i don't think) as i'll mainly be using it for emails
the only apps i'm interested in are maps and occasional google searches
useability & durability
decent sound quality (i'd like to listen to podcasts and maybe radio) and decent battery life would be good

i read which mag reviews and the samsung galaxy and htc wildfire phones seemed to do quite well but to be honest i'd like to spend as little as possible as i'm a skint student.

would prefer short contract but realise that doesn't go with low costs.

any good deals / suggestions gratefully received
many thanks
caroline
