Appaling lies from Sky

I have just helped a friend to cancel her sky subscription. The people at Sky thought that they were dealing with a 73year old lady. They said that if she cancelled she would not get any tv unless she bought a freesat card from them because the old analogue aerials would not receive the new digital signals.

Warn your granies etc about them.

    Not lies, but obfuscation.

Probably deliberately over-simplified by them, but in essence true in that you need to have a Freeview box or Integrated Digital Television attached to the 'analogue aerial' to receive the broadcasts.

Assuming your friend doesn't have an IDTV then the £20 for the Freesat from Sky card would be about the same as buying the Freeview box, and she would get more channels.

However, I agree that it doesn't result in much trust in an organisation when their staff are deliberately ambiguous.

But, of course, they should have explained that her existing subscription card automatically becomes a Freesat From Sky card immediately her subscription entitlements are turned off.

Thanks very much for the comment Heinz, I will make sure that she tries it after the 30 days notice ends.

Simply remove the viewing card and you'll see most of the channels that are free to air.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

The fee provides for a REPLACEMENT card when they update them. AIUI, you lose Channel 5 without a card, and the Regional channel numbering for 101/2, which would be your local BBC1 & 2. I agree they are being disingenuous, but at least they are warning that if you don;t have an IDTV, you may be stuffed.

"appalling lies", "obfuscation", "deliberately ambiguous", "disingenuous" - strong stuff - what a plethora of big words :D

How about: "working to a (poorly written) script" ?
  • You can still get Channel 5, add it manually to other channels. Google it to find instructions.

But that won't be needed until Sky physically changes (not updates over the air) the cards again.

As they've only just done that (at enormous expense - more than 10 million cards), they'll wait as long as possible and, probably, at least another 4 years.
