Only thing I had to pay for was a copy of the marriage cert as I'd given mine to the solicitor during the divorce!

Would he not give it back?

You take your absolute to the bank etc and change to your maiden name.. it never stopped being your name you just borrowed XHs for a while... you dont need to do it by deed poll and if they tell you that you do.. they are wrong and lying to get money out of you!!

That said.. other than my medical stuff I stuck with KHs surname.. I hated my name growing up I dont want it back.. but I didnt want the baby having KHs surname on her birth certificate so use my maiden name for doctors/hospital .. I went in .. filled in a short form and they changed it a couple of days later.

Any forms etc the solicitor had.. inc the marriage certificate you can go get back.. just ring up and ask.. the might even post them out to you if you say it is difficult to get in.

I do use Ms now rather than Mrs though.. but whatever.. I know I am not maried to the tw4t any more that is god enough for me.. plus I still have the same surname as most of the children and them being at school still makes it less embarrassing for them and the staff.. was amusing when we took the baby in and a TA said oh the new baby G and I said actually no.. lol.

I just got married and Im doing all the stuff LittleMissthrifty said.

You dont need to pay deedpoll to change your name, in the UK you can call youself whatever you want you do not have to pay them to have it changed.

Its free to change your driving licence but the passport they want the price of a new one and dont add the time on! So until mine runs out in 2 years I will just use my old name to book hols in.

Agree with passport. I have 6 years left on mine & at £77.50 to change.
Just remember:) to book all holidays in that name & kept my EHIC in that name.

I am in the same position regrading my marriage certificate. I was told by my solicitor that I needed to surrender it as it was no longer valid and it wouldn't be returned to me after the divorce was granted. :(
I've gone an ordered a copy but it's not the same as having the original document which still holds some happy memories as well as some sad ones....

    Leonard: How much you got?
    Penny: Nothing!
Leonard: How can you walk around with no money?
Penny: I'm cute, I get by.

I got mine back without any arguing.. alone with all the other documents I had provided...

Most utilities won't need much proof if any, the only ones who can be a pain to deal with is the water companies.

When I got divorced, I didn't bother changing the name on the bill, they wanted the original copy of the decree absolute and my birth certificate, I didn't feel happy sending such important documents to them. When I remarried, my DH didn't like the idea of the bill coming in my old married name so I contacted them again to see if they would accept copies. This time, they wanted my birth certificate, decree absolute and my new marriage certificate!

The bill is still in my old married name! :rotfl:

  • I did a bit of 'googling' and seems like the court will keep (and destroy) the marriage certificate:(
    see link here
If I had known that I would have sent them a certified copy as the original was handwritten and enough time has passed for me to see it in a sentimental light rather than through a red mist.... Oh well!

  • I did this recently now that my daughter has married.

I started with the bank and my employer (had to make sure I got paid into the right account!).
I then did the electoral roll (contact your local council) as this could affect any credit you apply for.
Next, I did the utilities as the bills arrived
I also sent off details to any insurance companies - these were the only ones that asked for paperwork as proof
I am not going to do my passport until that needs renewing as it is soooo expensive SO I have also kept one credit card in my married name incase I have to book travel (so that name will match passport)
I still have to do driving licence and will do that next as I have now recieved my paperwork back from the insurance company

Other than that, I would contact any company that you get mail from addressed to your married name as they occur.

This has taken a few months but there is not time limit. Not quite as daunting when you take it one step at a time.
