BT and cooling off, with a twist

I was with Talk Talk and changed over to BT for broadband & calls. The live date was 15th August.
Broadband switched over on the 15th, but the telephone service did not. That was due to a problem with BT's database, but after various emails and calls where we nailed the problem the service still remained unconnected. So I gave up and cancelled the order on 28th August. Got my MAC code (the one efficient and problem-free part of the whole thing
) and trooped back to Talk Talk, who still have my phone service.
Sod's law, their systems can't reconnect broadband to a calls-only package. Unbelievable, but it is the case. They could set up a new account, but that would involve changing the telephone number.
However, if I migrate broadband and telephone from another provider, there would be no problem. So I figured I just need BT to take over the calls and then swap back to Talk Talk immediately.
Only now I see that there is effectively no cooling-off period with BT. Am I right in thinking that technically the second they activate the telephone line, I'm screwed as they'll have me on an 18m contract? Or am I okay as long as I state every time I talk to them that the only reason I'm signing up again is to fix the mistake that they created?

Yes, the cooling off period no longer applies once the service has commenced. No free lunch, and no free laptop
