PC Screen Problem

Hello, i wonder if anyone might know why my computer screen is suddenly just a white screen? (currently using the laptop) I am assuming it is simply broken, but is there any chance it might sort itself out or I can help it to do so? I have already rebooted the pc and unplugged/replugged the screen to no avail.

Is it white straight after switch on, ie can you see the bios screen?

does the screen work if you plug into laptop, and switch on external screen output (usually by a Fn + Fxx key combination)

has it been moved recently (or had vga cable out recently), and have you checked both ends of the vga cable.

If you plug yr monitor into yr laptop VGA socket, this should give you some indication of whether it is yr monitor or PC thats causing the prob; note you may need to use a function key on yr laptop to switch on an external monitor - on my Samsung I have to use the Fn key in conjunction with the F4 key. If it works then you'll probably have to try a different graphics card to verify it is the graphics processor - more on that if necessary.

thanks for the replies - not sure how to go about plugging it in to the laptop tbh don't think have a cable for this.

Closed - it's white as soon as I turn the pc on - it was fine when I went to work yesterday and when I came home I was confronted with this white screen - it is quite old tbh (maybe 5+ years could be more) so maybe it just is time to replace it. Thanks again
  • Unplug monitor from back of pc and use same cable to plug it into lappy there should be a similar connection on the lappy.

You need to establish if it is the PC, the cable or the monitor by following the above info and eliminating each component in turn, not just assume it's a failed monitor.
The existing monitor cable should connect to the laptop.
Then try the PC with another monitor.
    Finally swap out the cable.
If it's the PC, the first thing to check would be the graphics card.

  • Thanks for the help. I have now plugged the monitor into the laptop - didn't press any f keys it just gave me a message asking if i wanted to duplicate screen on the new hardware and I said yes, but it still shows nothing - it is in fact now just black as opposed to white. Is is safe to now assume that it is fact "broke" ?:o

No, because all you have then eliminated is the PC. It could still be the cable.
But I still think that you need to select the correct input on the laptop using the correct 'F' key.
Then check the cable and PC 0utput.

How do i know which is the correct "f" key? Tried fn and f4 and nothing happening. TBH I'm relieved that it's not the pc, so can swallow having to buy a new moniter - it is a bit dated anyway.
  • Could be F8 but will probably have a symbol on that looks like to little rectangles( to represent the monitor), perhaps one shaded or with a "radiant" outline the other just blank.

thanks it looks like its F1 has a little pic of a laptop and then another screen. is is ctrl F1 or fn/f1? the monitor kind of comes to life when i plug the cable back in but doesn't display anthing then goes back to sleep.

Edit: tried ctrl/f1 which i think is right - it takes the laptop screen back to full size (it gets reduced when I first plug the cable in) - pc monitor still dead tho.
