sooo as title sais i have a diesel 1.9dci scenic 2002 its covered 115000, now normally i get an oil change every year including filyter and get castrol edge for turbo diesels i have recently started doing more miles and think i will be doiung about 18000 a year is that to long to leave an oil change once a year ?
not sure i can afford castrol edge twice a year but i could afford castrol magnetec for diesles.
what would you do ?
once with castrol edge 5w40
twice with magnetec 10w40

at least twice..
i change mine every 5k miles and mines a dervSealed pot challenger # 10
1v100 £15/3000 -
twice with magnetec 10w400

At least every 10,000 miles. At 18k a year, do it every 6 months with a quality oil.
Think of it as insurance agianst the £1,000 cost of a turbo replacement as you run well into 6 figures. Diesels dirty up their oil quite quickly, and the turbo relies on clean oil to keep their spindle spinning happily at 100,000 rpm!
If it really is a choice between twice with cheaper oil or once with quality oil, then twice with cheaper oil!0 -
Magnatec is ok.
I'd use any decent semi synthethic diesel oil every 6 months.0 -
As mentioned above, 10k/annual oil and oil filter changes are the best bet.
The oil lubricates the bearings on the turbo, so the better quality oil, generally, the longer your turbo will last.
I'd say forget the name of the oil. Most oil companies (such as castrol) sell engine oil under different brands at different costs. What you need is decent, low viscosity fully synthetic oil which is suitable for diesel engines. Magnatec may have a fancy name but I think it is only part/semi synthetic and an inferior oil to many others on the market where you are paying for the name.
If you are doing 18k p.a, I'd suggest a twice-annual oil change.0 -
Magnetec now comes in two flavours:
A1 Fully synth and
A3/B3 Semi synth
I bought the former for about £4 per litre when it was on special offer at Costco, normally about £5-6 per litre I think. Asda also do it for about £6/l.
other places to try are NielsenCDG (sign up to their mailing list and receive an extra 5% discount)
and
Opie oils, now these aren't initially as cheap as the above but they will price beat and if you call them then you maybe able to bargain in free delivery too.0 -

I wouldn't put the A1 in anything not spec'ed for it .
It doesn't have the same HT/HS (High temperature / High shear rate) that an A3 has,
It'll cause faster engine wear, and if it's not rated for diesels (B) it'll not have enough detergent in.
A very bad choice of oil to use for long term, but good for energy saving for fleet use that you'll sell before the engines wear out.0 -
thanks gusy looks like twice a year it is then
engine seems pretty sweet at the moment nice and quiet and past an emission test recently with factory spec output so still running good
and i wanna keep it that way. 0 -

The point of my post was to illustrate that be aware there are 2 versions and to give retail options.
Mikey is right that you should only use it in cars rated for it. For info, It is rated for diesel b1/b5

I'd be surprised that the semi-synth version would outperform it in wear.0 -

B1/B5 is a definate no-no.
Buy the correct spec of the oil for your car.
Just don't buy any synthetic because you've read that synthetic is the best.
The correct one is best, the wrong one will just cost you more to destroy your engine and turbo.
From ACEA
"A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate (HTHS) viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s.
These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manualor handbook if in doubt."
Their highlight. Some Fords and Volvos, but that's are I know of of the top of my head.
I use Costco, they quite often had a lot of the A1 oil they can't sell, it's not a good general oil. A3/B3 as a rule.0
