Swapping sim from iPhone to iPad & back again

Due to an iPhone (4) needing repairing, I was wondering if it's possible to put the sim into my iPad to use for emailing etc until the phone is fixed.

Looking around, I saw that the APN settings need setting up in the iPad to allow it to connect with the sim.

However, after speaking to Orange they advised there would be problems swapping the sim back to the iPhone.

Does anyone know if this is possible, or whether Orange are simply trying to get another package for the iPad?

After seeing how easy it should be, I don't want to be paying out for a PAYG sim for the iPad just for a couple of weeks if I don't need to.
