Today I was told the following :-

A neighbour who has lived in the same council property all his life is being made to move by the Council. His parents have now died and he lives in the house on his own. He looked after his parents while they were poorly . He has kept the house and gardens are in immaculate condition.

Our village is a close one and this story is getting around thick and fast. I am staggered that the Council can move this person, and not only that, says they cannot re-house him in the village. He will have to move away !

How can this be fair. Surely other things must be taken into account, not just move him because there is only one person in the house ! Have we become that callous !

No, he has just joined the real world, where the rest of us have resided all our lives.

He still has more rights than the average person who rents in the private sector. :)

It's maybe 'not fair' that a young family are effectively being denied the opportunity to live in this house for as long as he stays there.

I thought that, as long as there hadn't been a previous succession then a family member could take over the tenancy. I guess there must have been in this case - father dies first, passes tenancy to wife who then dies herself.

May not be fair in one context. However he has had the benefit for many years.
  • So the deal is make a new family happy by, maybe, ruining someone else's life. He could end up in an area he does not want to live in, knows nobody............ He is not a young person

I still think its unfair. It's like a game of a pass the parcel and he's the parcel ! All for the good of someone else.
  • If he's not young he has had ample time to plan for his future. He had been living with two other adults in subsided accommodation. Many people would love that luxury, to be able to save and pay for himself to have deposit to buy or rent a home for himself.

He should be able to hold out for something acceptable. A former neighbour did this after his Mother died (family had lived in the house since it was first built in the 50's).

This is almost certainly the case.

Most adults have to learn to stand on their own two feet at some stage in their lives, and to become responsible for housing, feeding and clothing themselves (and usually their family).

It seems that this gentleman has reached this stage rather later in life than is the norm, but that is not a reason to deny a family in need access to a social housing property that was designed and intended for a family to live in.

If perhaps the guy was a long term carer then perhaps he wasn't able to sort out his own accommodation.
