Boiler Juice is an organisation that buys oil in bulk on behalf of its members. We've successfully used them in the past and it worked out cheaper than staying with the same supplier.

    Beware..............

"Once upon a time BoilerJuice would try to get the best price for you by aggregating quotes from people in the same area and finding the cheapest supplier. It was a brilliant idea and appeared to work quite well. Now that BoilerJuice is owned by GB Oils (the largest single oil-distribution company in Great Britain), it simply claims to "deliver millions of litres of heating oil to thousands of customers". It also reckons that "you can benefit from Group Savings as we automatically group your order with others in your area, passing any savings directly on to you". No mention is made of finding the best supplier, so if they still do it then they are being very quiet about it.

Furthermore, their quote page now only offers different quotes according to how soon you want the oil delivered, not according to different suppliers as it always used to."
  • Many thanks for that update on BoilerJuice, Moonrakerz.

Does anyone offer a similar service to the original? That certainly saved time, something we have precious little of.

Boilerjuice is not cheapest. See this post here.

How long is your tenancy contract? How long will you be there? Oil is cheaper if you buy larger quantities (the lorry/driver costs the same whether you buy 500 or 2000 litres) but 2000 - 2500 should last a year.

What does your tenancy agreement/inventory say about the oil? Does it
    a) record the 500 litres in the tank?
    b) say you must leave the same amount in the tank when you leave?
    c) agree to re-imburse you if there is more in the tank when your tenancy ends?

It will be virtually impossible to ensure your oil purchasing and usage results in there being 500 ltrs when your tenancy ends.

If not, go and talk to your landlord/agent and get this all agreed /documented now, otherwise you'll end up with arguements over your deposit when you move out!

Whether you buy 500 litres or 2000 litres, buy it now. Prices not only rely on crude oil and the strength of Sterling against the dollar, but also supply and demand. Weather extremes come and go quickly in this country, often unannounced, and if you have to buy suddenly during a cold snap then expect either a price increase or a delay in a vehicle delivering to you.

Shop around for the best deal, not only from the nationals but from the local suppliers' too. Email every supplier in the Yellow pages if you have to as prices can vary as much as 11p or 12p a litre!., and HAGGLE. Its not mid winter yet and some oil suppliers are still quiet, but in a couple of weeks it might be all change as Autumn sets in.

Oil Fired is more expensive to run than Gas CH, so make sure you budget for the future usage and requirements accordingly.

I've been buying oil for 20 years and never found Boilerjuice anywhere near the cheapest. I can usually get it at least 4-5p cheaper by ringing around the 6 or so local suppliers (both indepenants and nationals). I always ring around as there is often 3-4p difference on the same day between suppliers, I get the cheapest quote and play one off against the other to price match and then haggle an extra 0.5-1p off.
If the ball had gone in the net it would have been a goal.

Just thought I'd update this in case it helps give anyone else a rough idea of costs. We're in central Scotland and we've just bought 1000 litres at a cost of £514 from Highland Fuels. They were the cheapest quote. Next cheapest was Brogan Fuels at £538.

Edit: I'm a big fat liar. Sorry. :o Turns out it was £614 and £638 respectively. Not such a bargain after all then. Mix up in communication between OH and I. :o
