Pipex

Thought i'd let other people know about my experience with Pipex. I have just recently completed 12 months with them on a monthly contract of £23.99. I phoned them a few days ago to request my MAC code so that i could switch suppliers, the main reason being to get someone cheaper. There was no problem with this, after 72 hours they provided me with the MAC code and i was able to give it to my new supplier. However a few days later Pipex debited £82 from my bank account without any explanation. Upon investigation it is supposedly a cancellation charge! This is despite the fact that i am past twelve months. In addition the only cancellation fees that they cite are if you cancel within twelve months when you would have to pay the remainder of your contract and the price of the modem (£20). However neither of these apply to me. I contacted Pipex and they say they have contacted their finance department and will take 7-10 days to get back to me which is frankly a complete joke.
This is doubly annoying as when i spoke to their customer services requesting the MAC code the only mention of payment was that i would be charged for this month's service and then reimbursed for what i didn't use.
Just wanted to post this as a warning to any Pipex users or anyone thinking of moving to Pipex.
Aside from this i've had a few other problems with Pipex - for the first 8 months of my contract the service was frequently extremely slow for hours on end (ie dial up speed). They also occasionally changed how they would take my payment, ie take 2 months in one debit instead of one a month. I have also even had requests for payment when payment had already been debited from my account.
Would be interested to know of anyone else's experience...

I use pipex no problems except
I am paying more for a 1 Meg connection than some people are paying for 8 Meg. An auto update to you highest connection speed would be nice.
Would like them to implement some kind of spam filtering as standard (FREE)
Been with them for over 2 years. Very good service. no down time at all. and 12 mailboxes as standard.0 -
I've also been using Pipex for just under two years with no worries and few complaints (but I believe Pipex now throttles BitTorrent connections), though am currently paying £23.99 pm inc. VAT for a 1MB connection so am looking about for cheaper alternatives. I belive Demon do a similar package to my current Pipex one for £19.99 pm.
I agree with DrSmutt that a speed upgrade would be nice (although my line is only capapble of 5.5MBps at the moment).0 -

The exact same thing has happened to me this week:
Phoned pipex, confirmed I was out of the 12 month contract, confirmed no charges would apply, requested MAC. Was put through to another dept, who also confirmed no charges, and they processed the MAC request. The next day the MAC email arrived. I checked my Pipex invoices- £82.74 cancellation charge has appeared! Phone again- error blamed on the automated system. They will contact finance dept.
Today received email from finance, saying they cannot refund until the contract was terminated (in a months time!). So they get the privilege of £83 of my money for a month? Fantastic...
Will be glad to see the back of Pipex...0 -
thanks for the info on pipex.Been on pipex for three years with no problem.Im thinking of changing as speeds on pipex have dropped lately, esp in the peak period.Im on a fixed 2Mb connection and speeds can drop to 512k.Plenty of other customers on the pipex forums not happy with their service either.0
