Can I get a CRB check on a cleaner?

IMO, a CRB check is a waste of time. It only shows people who have been caught. It is not a guarantee that someone will not steal from you or that someone isn't a !!!!!phile as the Ian Huntley case illustrated.

Too many people have seen the CRB check as some kind of guarantee.

Whilst I do not disagree with the sentiment - the Huntley case pre-dated CRB checks and was the reason they were introduced! Had eCRB's been in place, he would not have been able to slip through the cracks of the old, informal system of checks that depended on someone checking the right file!

The Huntley case was not pre CRB, there were crb checks but he went by a different name so concerns did not show up. Also there were issues with police information not being centralized, and thus not shared between different authorities. CRB checks have been in operation for a least the last 20 years but were called police checks earlier on. CRB checks were not introduced after Ian Huntley, but sharing of information and checks were improved.

Also its an invasion of civil liberties to expect a cleaner to have a crb, the op does not have the right to know this information.

Well we are both right and both wrong. CRB checks were introduced in March 2002 and Ian Huntley committed the murders in August 2002. However, as I stated, Ian Huntely was checked under the old system, not under CRB - the CRB systenwas introduced because of its ineffieciences in linking police intelligence networks. There were a number of arrests, particularly relating to sex crimes, in the name he used, but because he was never charged, this information did not form part of the previous system of disclosure.

Another issue is that Huntley did not work at the school the two children went to. He worked at a different school in the area. The link was his girlfriend, not him. She was a teaching assistant in their class. Her record was completely clean which meant she would still have been allowed to work there. The kids went to the house looking for her, not him.

I don't see anything wrong with hiring a cleaner. You have the money, and you're giving someone a job. That is how the economy works [I wonder how many of the nay sayers, are also the ones saying there are no jobs?]

I wish I could afford a cleaner.

If she's working in your home then I don't think there's anthing to say that you can't ask for a CRB check. I would cover the costs yourself though if your considering it.
