Woodburners....Want to fit one, but got no chimney!!! Help

Hi all,

I’m new here so bear with me:)

Ok I have a semi detached house, with no chimney.. house built in the 80's. We do have a gas fire flue which we know is a non starter.

We're looking at fitting a woodburner / multifuel stove. I've been told that it can be done, but we'd need a "twin wall" flue that would run on the inside of the house & out the top of the roof (Our inside wall where the burner would sit backs onto the neighbours, so no outside wall to plumb through to get rid of the pipe & the space it would take up on route to roof)

As I'm a chippy & was brought up in an engineering environment I can do most things myself (without having any DIY Disasters) and I’d like to have a go at fitting this system in myself

SO:
Does anyone know the average costs of fitting a twin wall system? As in Time, materials & pitfalls involved.

I did find a place with good prices for flues that are Hetas & BS approved. I have also downloaded a fully copy of the building regs, which Im reading through currently

PS I have all the wood I can eat :) so no problem there.

Any info / suggestions would be very much appreciated indeed folks

  • I am a chippy with a wood burner.

We do not have your setup but?

If you do it yourself it will invovle building regs possible planning permission? Not sure about taking it up the inside of the house. Would the best be to get someone in to quote for the work and see what they say?

  • Yeah after much reading up & doing the math, getting someone in is prob gonna be the best option, just not the cheapest.

From what I've have managed to deduce from the "J" Building regs so far, there wont be any planning permission needed, just certificates for the work done for H&S laws etc..

Im awaiting a reply on a quote... though the guy (who's Hetas reg'd & recommended by a friend) did say its no problem doing the twin wall flue on inside, and showed me a few pics of jobs he'd done, which looked good from a workmanship aspect, so prob will consider him for the job after I get a couple more quotes.

The guy did recommend a "Bohemia 30/40" for my living room. Does anyone have any history on these type of multifuel burners pros / cons?

Would like to know if anyone else has had the same as me done & what were the costs / parts involved...anyone?

    Watch this space... :)

We had the same sort of thing done - we live in a house with no chimney. Our chimney runs straight up through the house - through bedroom (where it has to be boxed in) and up through loft and out through roof.
We haven't regretted it for a minute - the chimney acts as a giant radiator going up through the house. So not only does the stove get hot the chimney does as well.
We got the same chap in to fit ours as he fitted one at a neighbour and we were impressed with what he had fitted. If best try and get hold of someone who has had one fitted and go and have a look.
Bends in the pipe tend to be expensive so it is best if you can keep as straight a line as possible. It took a couple of days to fit and was fairly straightforward.
It has made a huge difference to our LPG gas bill - which is a bonus as well.
