Youtube account.Tech help required

I have had a youtube account for years.I use a webmail address and the same user name.Never had problems and even when i click on 'youtube' from my bookmark it 'remembers me' and i can go into my favourites/channel etc etc.
BUT today it asked me to 'sign in'.So i entered email/username but it automatically showed my wifes Gmail a/c username.I dont use that nor do i even know her password.I couldnt log in so i went to the 'help' section.
It appears that youtube is linking to Gmail(it must recognise my IP address or something techy).
BUT i do not and have never used youtube in association with Gmail.
I then sent off the email address with which i registred and the answer came back that it is not recognised!!!How on earth can i now even access my channel again??Even if i logged in with wifes Gmail a/c and her password it wouldnt show my channel and identity which have used for years......Grrrrrrrr maybe its a blip.I have 'googled' the problem but it just confuses me more.
Thank you for reading this far(if you did) and ANY advice is welcome

All youtube accounts are required to be linked with a gmail account, it's annoying but not really much difference.
If you unlink them you wont be able to use youtube unless you link.0 -
it sounds like your wife has inadvertently linked your youtube account with her gmail account.
to check this go to youtube and click sign in, type your youtube username in the username box and your old youtube password in the password, if it comes up saying you have to use your wifes gmail password then you know they have been linked.
to solve this go make yourself a gmail account at gmail.com
get your wife to sign into youtube with her gmail account (which will log into your youtube username)
go to settings and then 'manage account' and select 'change which google account is linked to this account'
follow the steps and when it asks to link to the new google account use your gmail account.
your wife if she then wants to sign into youtube will have to create her own youtube username on her gmail account.0 -
When you tried to log in was their a link below the password box saying "Sign in as someone different" or "not you, click here"??Laters

Eh?
I've got a youtube account.
and no I haven't got a Gmail address at all.
The email address I supplied at sign up as a contact address was a hotmail one0 -
I am still confused a little.I actually do also have a gmail account but when i originally signed up to youtube i used a freeserve email address and a username.
Following above advice i have signed in to youtube using my gmail address and password but now of course it shows me as a new user,if you see what i mean, and so i have no access to all the stuff i was accessing on my original account.Somehow i suppose i have to link my freeserve address to my gmail account i guess then i can go into my channel on youtube?
This is hard work and quite annoying.I will have another go and see what it says again0 -
I have had another try.No good.
When i try to sign in it then shows my wifes Gmail account address in the 'user name' box then underneath the Password box in red writing it states"Please use your Google Account (wifes name @ gmail.com) password to sign in.We no longer support signing in with your old youtube password"
In other words it wants my wifes p/word for her google account(which i dont know anyway) and shes not here.....grrrr0 -

Exactly! I signed up years ago with a freeserve address. As i said we both have gmail accounts. But even if i did link my gmail to youtube wouldnt it just show me as a new user? Seems my old account is in the ether with lots of 'favourites'.Upsetting really.0 -
The plot thickens..................
I have google chrome as abrowser as well as Internet explorer.
I have just tried GoogleChrome to access Youtube and HeyPresto! it immediately showed my user name whch ive had for years>i didnt even have to 'sign in'
Whats going on here?0 -
Sorted...
Thanks for everyones input. In case anyone is interested i went to 'help' section on youtube and followed a process to 'unlink' my wifes gmail a/c from youtube and then link my gmail a/c to youtube. The only thing is now that if she tries to access youtube she wont get in...until i tell her the new password.
These huge conglomerates just make things more difficult for no reason. If youtube was not so good i wouldnt bother with it!0
