Local Borough Council:Kirklees
Council Tax Band Before:B
Council Tax Band After: A
Amount refunded:£810
Hi,
Followed Martins guide, and found two houses on our street a band A. Did all the checks, and we were pretty sure we should be a band A, so we went ahead and contacted the VOA. We were declined due to the 6 month limit. We appealed, but we didnt turn up to the appeal because it didnt state we had to, because of this our appeal was declined! Regardless of this, we got our research printed and tried again. We have been in our house 7 years, so wrote back, after a few unsuccessful phone calls, with our evidence-screen shots from our findings and a well worded letter. From this we got a letter from the VOA again saying they would review the banding "in light of new information" two weeks later we got a letter agreeing we should be a band A, then 1 week later a letter from the council confirming this. All in all this took about 3 months, and we had to be very persistent. We had to chase the VOA at ever step, they were very slack, and forgot to send us an important letter, so if you are on with a claim, please be persistent. We are getting a cheque for £810, plus our monthly bill drops to about £857 from over £1000, so a huge saving and excellent result! MANY thanks to Martin- we feel empowered now, and justice has been served!:T0 -
Council Harrow
Band before E
Band after D
Refund £1510
Just do as Martin says do your homework and apply. DON'T let them get away with it and be persistant as they can be very lax.
Thanks Martin I owe you more than one0 -
Hi
I sent a letter (template) to Lloyds TSB asking for about £1200 back, I promptly received a letter saying the decision in the high court is not yet complete and they will not pay anything until it is completed.
They also said they would ask any court that i wish to take them to, that the case be held until the high court case is completed.
Should i now send in a letter saying i want my money back now?
Many Thanks

We've had an unexpected extra, just after we moved in we applied for housing/council tax benefit as my hubbie was laid off. Just had a letter back dating our council tax benefit! don't know how they worked it all out (never will understand the benefit system) but not complaining as gaining another $100!!!!

Hi, Not sure whether I should appeal or not....
My neighbours are all Band F the same as me but according to the valuation that was calculated for 1991 I should be in Band D...
This was a new house in 2001 and I have been here since then, I believe that a neighbour tried to challenge when we moved in but was unsuccessful
Any help gratefully received.0 -
Local Borough Council: Dudley
Council Tax Band Before:D
Council Tax Band After:D
Amount refunded:Nil
Annual saving going forward: Nil
Our house is, was a D band with the houses around us a C, was told by Valuation office after they had come to measure our house that is was bigger than the rest and therefore they would not reband it although they did admit in last letter there were anomilies. I tried!. I did go on the appeals site but the council was backed on every one of them for the last twelve months. I am angry because i asked for the measurements of the next door neighbours compared to ours but was not given it.
Hope this helps someone. :rolleyes:0 -
im in the process of rebanding and was given this reply by the assessor-
"I wish to advise you that the band allocated to your property was based on an analysis of local sales evidence taking place on or around 1 April 1991, in accordance with the Council Tax (Valuation of Dwellings) (Scotland) Regulations 1992. The analysis is based on local sales evidence and not Indices created by for example Building Societies as these tend to look more at a national picture rather than on a local basis."
I believe that my banding should be b according to 1991 prices. i have been brought down to a band c from d but has anyone else been told this above?0 -
local council Birmingham
Council Tax Band before C
Council Tax Band now B
amount refunded £333
Wow, when I first called VOA I was told that as I had lived in my property for more than 6months I was not entitled to a review. But the very lovely chap that I spoke to said that it did look like I might be right and would look into it. True to his word I received a letter a couple of weeks later confirming the rebanding. Its taken a few more monthe and several emails to get a refund but its done!!woohoo. Thanks guys x0
