Applied for reduction from Band F to Band E based on other house bandings in my street.

After much chassing got a refusal. Asked if there was an appeal process and for explanation why my house should be in Band F when another house the same as my house was in Band E.

Again after chasing a reply I received notification that they did not know why my original application was rejected and that my Band was reduced to E. Received £2,654.06 refund.

Have just received a letter this morning from VOA saying we are being rebanded!:T

And they will back date it from 2005 when we first moved in!

The first letter I received basically said tough, but I followed it up with more information and now have a result.

Thank you so much, it was easy to do and I'd recommend having a go to anyone!

    Council Tax Band Before: C

    Amount Refunded: £1523.03
    Annual Savings Going Forward: £141.83

We first read your email in November about council tax rebanding and thought we would check ours. We discovered that our semi-detached bungalow was in band C while every other similar bungalow in our street was in band B, and we decided to apply for a rebanding. We got a form from the Valuation Office to complete asking for our reasons for the request. Six weeks later we received a letter confirming we had been rebanded from C to B and advising that they had notified our local council to action the change with effect from 1993.(We have been in the house since 1981). I rang the council to see if we were entitled to a refund and were told we would be getting a refund cheque for £1523.00!!! Truly amazing, and unexpected, what a windfall!

It really does work, and we wouldn't have known anything about this if it hadn't been for Martin. Many, many thanks! We're now telling all our friends.:T

We checked out our council tax by using the website and discovered that we should have been a D & not E. I rang our council and they said they would look into it. Six weeks later I got a letter confirming the re band and a cheque for £750 just before xmas. Now gonna see what can be done about our mis sold endowment!!! Thanks Martin.

You did not mention which Council.................

Thanks to a lot of inspiration from this site and the other users, I challenged my council tax banding almost on the very cusp of having lived at my new address for six months. A nervous wait later and the change was agreed. I thought the worst case scenario, because of a couple of structural changes to my house, would be that I would remain Band E, but am very pleased :rotfl:with the rebanding.:T I think the previous owners might be too, as it was backdated to 1993!
  • For a change, a bit of luck. Out of the blue, a valuation officer wrote to us with a notification that our live/work units in Hackney were wrongly banded. We had to then notify Hackney Council (who have sat on the money for weeks now, even though the cheque has been raised) and soon we should receive £1,200. I wonder if they include 6 years' interest? Hmmm, I think not. Still, it's a nice present at this time of year (when the council releases it from its sticky mitts) and will just cover my tax bill. I'm on the residents' committee, so I emailed all the ex-owners and let them know there was a nice Xmas present awaiting their claim. The money will be backdated to the build of the premises and each owner can claim for the period they lived there. Anyone who knows of any landlord who may not be forwarded mail by their tenants should check with their council as to their status. Lots of luck.
  • I faxed a letter to my valuation office outlining why I thought we were in the wrong band (the valuation was wrong in 1991, plus the fact that a flat that was bought for £12k more than ours, is smaller and is in the same block was in Band B while we were in Band C) in early January. Today I got a letter to say that the flat will be reclassified in band B - yay!
  • Hi All

Im in Band C but worked it out that we should be in Band B.We live in a 1 Bedroom Flat.Other Flats in our block and a block next door are 1 bedroom & 2 bedroom & all in Band C does it matter that we are all in Band C?

Should it be that the 2 Bedroom Flats should be in a higher Band than us?

Any Advice would be great,Thank you.
