Local Borough Council: South Derbyshire District Council
Council Tax Band Before: C
Council Tax Band After: B
Amount refunded: Approx £150
Annual saving going forward: £148
A little more work than i expected, but really worth it in the end. Moved into my first house in August 06, saw Martins programme on Tv and started looking into it. Ended up going to Tribunal which was a bit daunting, but did the prep/research beforehand and found out today that we won! Yippee
Thanks Martin0 -
Hi John 496
You might like to see my earlier posts. Write to the Customer Service Manager at your local VOA first. Then to the Chief Executive's Office ,New Court,Carey Street,London WC2A 2JE if you are refused by your local VOA. I received £563 back in interest so it is worth doing.
Good luck.

Its been a fairly long process for us but finally a success! First found out that we were in the wrong council tax band at the end of April this year when talking to a neighbour. Got in touch with the valuation office via webform and were initially refused on the ground that we did not apply within the time frame. First of all who would expect to be in the wrong band and as first time buyers back in 2001 were not really clued up on all this. Sent a letter back to the VOA appealing against this decision. 1 month passed still heard nothing so chased again via e-mail. Now almost 3 months later our council tax banding has been changed. Not sure what the next step is now - assume the VOA will write to confirm this0 -
Hi All

Local Borough: Sedgefield
Band Before : D
Band After : D
We followed instructions on website and found that all houses in our street were band D except for the 2 houses next to me which were band C. I found this strange as the 2 houses (band C) although originally 3 bedrooms have been extended somewhat, and have had new owners since the extensions were carried out. I have a 3 bedroom detached as have a few of my neighbours(who incidentally are also band D) but there are also houses with 5 bedrooms also on band D!!!
I spoke to our local evaluation office who stated they understood our point of view and would pass it on to the valuation officer. I was also told that as I had lived at property for more than 6 months I could not appeal his decision.
Today I received a letter refusing the re-banding and although acknowledging other properties were somewhat larger he pointed out that 3 similar dwellings had been refused appeal in 1993 and he was also of the opinion my house was in the band d valuation as at 1991(£10,000 more than the value when we used the calculator on this website) .
Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks - Just got over £2k back. But if I had got interest on the money outsanding each year at say 4% a year since 1991, it would have been twice as much ! Does anyone know whether it is possible to get paid compensation for this -rather than just the council tax as it was paid ? Obviously what I got was good but unfair as a quid in 2007 is not the same quid that it was in the early 90's it woon't go nearly as far.
