Local borough Council Crawley WSX
Council tax Band Before E
Council Tax Band Now D
Refund £ 1637.02
Saving of £ 225.39 per Year
It has taken nearly six months for my rebate to be received as at first my claim was rejected.I was also told Icouldnot appeal against their findings. I disagreed with that and sent further details ofsimilar properties andreasons for my claim. With in 48 hours i received a telephone call from the valuation officer apologising for the first letter and saying my claim was valid.
unfortunatley crawley Council took thier time and when they did refund it was only part payment and tookthe rest off my council tax for the coming year.iwanted afull refund and so after many calls to the council office and re-adjustments to my tax for the coming year I eventually got £1400 in cash and the rest off my 2007/8 tax. bye then Ihad decide enough was enough and hoped not to have to deal with Crawley council for some time to come.
Many thanks to Martin for his advice.0 -

South Somerset Distict Council
Previous Banding E
current Banding D
Amount Refunded £2750 (wef 1993)
Current Amount reduced pm £350.
Many thanks Martin. I followed your plan to the letter and fortunately had sufficient evidence from recent and previous house sales to justify my case. I found both the valuation officer at County HQ and local Tax office most helpful. Stuart V0 -

Local Borough Council: Greenwich
Council Tax Band Before: C
Council Tax Band After: B
Amount refunded: £1066.23
Annual saving going forward: £140.65 in 07/08
Success ….after a little perseverance! Following the guidance on your site I discovered that my 1st floor, 2 bed maisonette was banded the same as the adjoining 3 bed maisonettes AND the 3 bed semi-detached houses (with front and rear gardens) along my road. Additionally the price check calculator showed that my property would have been borderline Band A/B in 1993 - nowhere near Band C.
I wrote to the VOA but was told my appeal was invalid as I had lived in the property since 1992. They did however mention they had a duty to ensure properties were correctly banded so I wrote to them again restating the reasons for my appeal and requesting that even if they feel my appeal is invalid they nevertheless check the banding is correct. They wrote back saying they had referred my papers to a Valuation Tribunal but that they would also check my banding. Four weeks later I received a further letter telling me my property had been rebanded from C to B, backdated to 1993. It then took about 6 weeks for me to receive my refund from Greenwich Council. Well worth the wait!0 -
I've recently asked for my banding to be re-assessed as I am the only flat in a block of 6 that is classed in Band C. 4 others are in Band B and 1 is in Band A. The council have sent me a form to fill in which I have done, but they also state that 'if no alteration is appropriate you will not be able to appeal against my decision'. Can they do this? I thought an appeal against no alteration would be allowed and do not see why it wouldn't.

Herefordshire Council
Previous Band: D
Changed to Band : C
Refund: £500
When my sister in law moved in to her 3 bedroom detatched house around the corner from me and told me she was In Council Tax Band C, I was a bit miffed, as our house is similar and we were in Band D!!
I looked on your website and followed your instructions and then wrote a letter to the Valuations Office.
Two months later, I had a letter from the VOA and a cheque for £500 from the council !! I was over the moon.
Thank you very much for your advice on the website, if if wasn't for your info, I wouldn't have known where to start. Thank you.0 -
I followed the links in this site and had my banding re-assessed as "E", down fron "F". Had a refund of £2568. I have tried to get interest paid on the over payment since 1993 but have had no success either from Dudley MBC or from the Valuation Agency. Has anyone else tried to get interest as in my case it must be approx £800? Any help would be appreciated as surely the LA or th Valuation Agency should pay me interest. They have had my over payments since commencing in 1993 and if I had not overpaid then I would be earning interest on that money.
As stated above any help would be appreciated.
A word from Martin would be a help.0
