Heard about this a couple of months ago when Martin was on the radio,and thought we should do something about it.After doing all the checks we worked out that the worse that could happen was we would stay in the same banding group.
We called the council and were told we would be added to the list and they would contact us in about 6 weeks.We received a letter last week telling us they had altered the banding from B to C,and then today we heard about the refund.

I found a link to the VOA website quite by chance about a year ago and out of curiosity decided to check it out. Was quite nosey about what band my neighbours were in!!
Anyway next door was in Council Tax band C the same as me but with a big extension. My other neighbours were in B - so thought this can't be right.

Contacted my Council who said they couldn't help so went straight to the VOA. Within a month they agreed and changed my banding to B :j

Didn't get refund but reduced payments but it was backdated to when I moved to the property in 2002.

Please check the VOA website as it is so easy to get this sorted out.

Just wanted to report some success, I read Martins step by step article and followed it all through, We live in Cheshire and found one of our neighbours was in the band below us, we are F they are E and the houses are exactly the same as we all moved into a brand new housing development in 1999, after a couple of calls and 6 weeks wait I recieved a cheque for just shy of £1400, and we are now rebanded to band E so a £30 per month saving on the council tax also. Fantastic and easy, no letters had to be sent, took about 20 mins on the phone!!! :j :j :j
I am being super responsible and paying it all off my credit card, going to go through 6 years of statement tonight from HSBC with a bottle of wine and get them sent off tomorrow:T :T :T

Now waiting for a response from the VOA. I am asking for compensation amounting to acrude interest since 1993 as I'm out of pocket due to their mistake.

Thanks for your advice with perserverance I succeeded in getting a refund of £2665. My appeal was originally rejected but I was able to convince them using the Nationwide value checker that my house was overvalued as a result of a cursory valuation on their part.
Once again thanks for giving the little man some power over the system!

Amazing! Looked up our banding and found we were practically the only house in the village in Band F and challenged it with the Local Valuation Office. After a few weeks they advised that we were wrongly banded in 1993 and today (about 3 weeks later) we have received our cheque for £2,887.49.

Bank charges next - but Barclays have lost my letter(!)

I only bought my property in 2000 thats why Enfield only backdated my refund to then.

Looks like your council is trying to fob you off with short payment as mine did. Mine said they could only go back to 1999 as this was when their records started....Once I contacted my rating office again, they suddenly found the missing years and paid up. Good Luck

Saw Martins original publicity a while back but didnt act on it (doh). Neighbour few doors down prompted me to spring into action. All it took was phonecall to valuations office. Explanation of why I was appealing, "majority of the surrounding properties are on C!" gave explanation of how many rooms in house etc. Followed up with phone call 2/3 weeks l8tr and the approx 2 weeks after phone call received letter saying rebanded and backdated to 1993. My refund only since 2000 but not to be sniffed at all the same.

Rang council same day as received letter to enquire as to what next....they'd already credited current years account!! Promptly advised i'll take a cheque thank you very much and am currently waiting for them to show me the money.
