  • Local Borough Council: Glasgow
    Council Tax Band Before: F
    Council Tax Band After: E
    Amount refunded: £3010.03p

We are delighted at getting this refund, we have overpaid our council tax for the last 13 years! When we applied to be rebanded Glasgow Council said that they do NOT make mistakes and that it is unlikely we will get a refund! Well they DID make a mistake with ours and probably many more like us.

It's well worth the little time it takes to sort. :j

Glasgow never make mistakes...that's a laugh! :rotfl:

    Local authority Winchester
    Council Tax before D
    Council tax after C
    Refund £1300

We live in a row of three terraced houses in a close of detatched houses and we were all in band D.We moved in in 1995 and the banding difference then was small so it never mattered much .The difference in bands in now over £200 a year so it matters.
We rang our local authority who said it would take about 8 weeks to review our case and we were given a named person who would be responsible and after 6 weeks we have a revised council tax bill for this year of £45 to pay.
    Sadly no cheque to spend.

Yes, I know that's a lot of money and thanks a lot to Martin, BUT, the Valuation Officer backdated the valuation to 1993 and, as we are now in 2007, I make that 13 years and my local authority have backdated the overpayments to year 1998/9 (Nine years)! Can they do that? Well, they have so what redress do I have for the approx £1000 that I have overpaid and have not had reimbursed? BTW I have lived here since 1973..

My current year has been downsized from £ 2359 to £2044 - great!
I'm having the same problem my council has only backdated 6yrs. Go to council tax discussion forum, I've had some good advise.
    Good luck,
    Grace

Many thanks to Martin and the team, without your site I would not have thought of questioning my band!

VOA claim took about 6 weeks as estimated by them.
I then phoned Hounslow Council twice and requested a refund, they said they would put it in hand. I have since written to them twice, no refund and no reply, it would seem they intend to hold on to the 'Refund' Any ideas?

Thanks Grace, I'll try that. However, since my initial post, I have now had a letter from the Council saying the ONLY way they will consider my claim to which I am entitled is to produce documentary evidence that I have paid the money in the first place, as they have destroyed all their records.

Must talk to my Bank, but I can hear the answer - It will cost you £££££'s to produce duplicate statements.

Got my band reduced from an E to a D.

The council added the rebate to our account for the year and refunded us the overpayment until we asked for the full amount (cheeky blighters).

Spoke to VOA as regards getting the interest on this money and they said they would investigate but will only pay out if there was an error and not if it was a difference in judgement between surveyors
What does this mean? Surely they have admitted the property was mis-valued, it doesn't matter how it occured.

We moved in Dec 2006 to a new build and shortly after receiving the banding letter I read the Money Saving Expert advice re council tax appeals. I discovered that we were in fact the same banding as identical properties but when I visited several house valuation websites eg Nationwide House Price calculator, HBOS and UCB home loans we found that in 1991 our house was worth between £5,000 and £26,000 less than where banding F began. We appealed providing all the details including what all the houses like ours had sold for and all the websites with 1991 valuations and received confirmation last week that we were sucessful.

Loujim Could you post a link to the sites HBOS and UCB that you used?
Might help some of us on 'council tax discussion thread' who are having a long slog with voa.
Including me and I was the original poster way back in August 2005 !

    Thanks.

as I say well done all you have succeded. Today I have recieved a letter from the voa rejecting my application, I was told the valuation was done by square footage, I don't know where to turn, I'm trying to see if can paste my letter on here as the VOA have said I cannot appeal.

After listening to some of you who didn't give up, please help me, ideas on the letters or direction I should take would be fantasic, I am now so depressed and miserable.

    Please help...
