I applied for a re-banding in the way suggested by Martin, and after some arguement with the Listings Officer, I managed to get it to work. Tendring Council, Tax Band F reduced to Tax Band E, total refund £2573, saving £300 this year as well. Not only that, as part of my arguement, I quoted my next door neighbour as being in the same position as myself. He also got a letter refunding him the same amount, without asking for it. We are all going out for a good meal on the proceeds. Cheers, Woodville.
  • Vicki, the same happened to me. I applied for a rebate and was told that they would look at rebanding for me but if they went ahead with that I couldn't appeal their decision. Needless to say they didn't reband my property.
  • Thanks so much after being in Band E for 10 years we have now droped to Band D saving £318 on this years council tax alone, and have been told by Carlisle City Council there is a cheque in the post for £2,300 refund. Thanks to you and me they have automaticly reduced a number of my neighbours properties.the whole process has taken about 12 weeks depending on how long the post takes ?

    Council Tax Band Before: F
    Council Tax Band After: E
    Amount refunded: To be calculated
Annual saving going forward:£266.97 per annum

We moved in Dec 2006 to a new build and shortly after receiving the banding letter I read the Money Saving Expert advice re council tax appeals. I discovered that we were in fact the same banding as identical properties but when I visited several house valuation websites eg Nationwide House Price calculator, HBOS and UCB home loans we found that in 1991 our house was worth between £5,000 and £26,000 less than where banding F began. We appealed providing all the details including what all the houses like ours had sold for and all the websites with 1991 valuations and received confirmation last week that we were sucessful.
  • I have just had a call in response to my claim that I was in the wrong Council Tax Band. After 2 months and just a few calls and one letter, I will now receive around £800 refund. This information you provided is invaluable and it just goes to show what can be done. Many thanks again.:T

Hi all, First time poster here.

Right, i put in for the council tax review as described by Martin and got letter to alter existing entry in valuation list.

I went from Band c to B, and seven years back pay :rotfl: :j (me)

That was in 5th march 2007, today i received another letter dated 18/4/2007 saying he has completed review and does not agree different banding should apply and does not intent to alter valuation list.

Iam now a band b on the web VOB site , will this mean i will go back to a C and have to pay back the money ???

How can this be, can they do this ???

The close i live on has 13 homes, 2 the same builds as mine on band b, the rest c.
and 2 with extra bedrooms and larger in size band b. but nobody else has applied for re band.

Am i the first person to be treated like this, and letter says there is no right to appeal against his decision...

Thanks Preston Valuation office, mr p walling,
    Please help, Yours Graham.

    Council Tax Band After: D
    Amount refunded: expecting £2000+
Annual saving going forward £280 on last year.

The whole process took 3 weeks. I had 2 rejection letters, 1 refering back to the lack of challinging the banding in 1993 the other informing me that my appeal had been passed on to the Valuation Tribunal.

I then received 2 letters on the same day. 1 from the Valuation Tribunal Service stating that my appeal would be held withing the next 6 months, the other from the VOA stating my band would be regraded to band D with a note for me to sign withdrawing my appeal as the VOA now agreed with me.

Thanks Martin and also the people who left their successes as they encourage me to go for it.

21/04/07 received my notification of rebate for £2600 today. Did anybody elses council send them 15 seperate envolopes (one for each years amount and 1 confirming the full rebate)? Perhaps this is an area for the council to save money?

Amount refunded:£206 for me plus the new owner
    Annual saving going forward:£500

Thanks for everything, I saw the item on TV and checked out my old house. It appeared that I had been overcharged in 1999-April 2000, when I had moved. I contacted the local offices following all your links and they said they could only take action from the present owner, so I wrote to him hoping that he would read my letter and not file it away as from some mad woman, he rang me to ask for more information and I refered him to your site and told him what he needed to do and that I wasn't looking for money from him as I was sure we would both be due a repayment.

He kept me in touch with everything he was doing and advised me a couple of weeks ago that the council had changed his band, saving him £50 a month plus backdated to when he moved in.

I received a cheque this week for £206.14 for my overpaid year, in addition the new owner sent me a voucher for £25 to say thank you for putting him in the position to save on his outgoing, which I thought was more than generous as I had told him from the start that I wanted nothing from him just the letter to the council.

Thanks Martin you have made two people very happy.

  • 3000 thanks martin

    Local Authority North Lincs
    Original Banding F
    Revised Banding E
    Amount refunded £3040

I followed Martin's v. easy instructions, completed original appeal against banding by e-mailing the Council tax dept. They originally dismissed my appeal so I resubmitted with more details of the comparisons I'd made between our house and neighbours who had lower bands. A valuation officer visited the house and backed our appeal. 3 weeks later a notice of rebanding arrived and 2 weeks after that a cheque for £1300 + a statement informing us that 2007/08 council tax was fully paid so that equalled £3040 + c £300pa saving in subsequent years. Thank you Martin we would never have done this without you......ever thought of entering politics ? "The People's
    Prime Minister " ????
