Some help with FreeSat from Sky Please?!!

We've currently got Sky+ bog standard package around £22 a month. I want to cancel it as there's never enough on to make it worth paying for it, however I'm going to have to convince him in doors.

Soo... I've been looking at FreeSat from Sky, as I understand it I can cancel my Sky+ and get a card from them for £25. I could then also pay £10.50 a month to record channels. (I think I understand this bit ok).

However, we've only got 1 tv and aerial (currently in the living room) and would like tv in another room. If I were to buy for the other room a TV, plus the freesat box with installation etc for £175 would it work? As in, all that's in that room is a power socket - does the installation mean I don't need an aerial? And can I have 2 FreeSat's (one just a card in an old Sky+ box and one proper FreeSat HD box) at the same time?

If I'm going ok so far, would this cost me £25 for the card for the living room and £175 for the box, card and installation for the other room? And is this actually totally one off, or does it only last a year? And then I could pay £10.50 a month to be able to record?

Sorry, I know I'm asking lots, I've read their site, other posts and rang them twice and I'm still a bit baffled. (Doesn't help that the CS staff know what it's all about and can't understand why I don't just get it!!!)

Thank you to anyone who has the patience to read this, let alone reply!!!

as you have sky now it will have a white viewing card so you dont need to pay
£25 for that it will still get you the free channels on sky and the ftv
(free to view) channels on sky when you cancel

list of free channels here to convince him there's some good free stuff

    http://mgpc.b1.jcink.com/index.php?showtopic=28&view=findpost&p=73

this is uncanny I've posted this 3 times now I'm not spamming it ppl

you mention TV in another room and aerial sky runs of a dish
you have sky+ can you see your dish does it have 2 or 4 fittings on it
where the wire from the house connects to the dish ?

if it has 2 fittings you need a Quad lnb fitting to it
that's if you can get to it,is it up high on a chimney or wall ?

if it has 4 fittings on it there will be 2 free you can connect a
freesat/sky box to that without paying install charges

if you can manage without recording in the other room
you can get a freesat or ex sky box from car boot etc and
connect that to the dish you just need some f connectors / coax / freesat/ex skybox

£30/40 cost something like that for a ex-skybox fittings and maybe a new lnd and some DIY-ing

some of what i say depends on your dish and fittings on it
and if you can access it from a ladder safely
if you need to change the lnb or fit new coax

the lnb is on the end of the arm that comes off the sky dish
can you tell us what you can see does it the 2 or 4 fittings on it

this is a quad lnb with 4 fittings http://images.maplin.co.uk/300/a15fb.jpg
    Dual lnb have only 2

    the recording option paying £10.50
i'm not sure sky do that now they have just changed there packages T/C etc Sept 1st

I Have 3 ex sky box's running of 1 dish in the kitchen / 2 bedrooms for the kids

If you invest in a Freesat PVR (Humax Foxsat HDR is the one to go for) then you can have all the Sky+ functions for only the upfront cost of the box-why pay Sky £10.50pm forever?
You will also get the 4 Freesat HD channels.
If you already have a Sky install then you don't need to pay for for !!!!!!. That is what your box will revert to when you cease your sub.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thank you both so much for your help.
I can't get to the dish but he should be able to so will get him to have a look. Would be good to be able to run multiple boxes for free, only want it to record in one room.
Will have a look into the Human Foxsat, will this need an aerial? Or just plugged into the power socket?

Thanks again, will be nice to know I can make a one off payment and not have to budget the month cost in. :-)

    It's Humax, not Human.
No, the Foxsat does not work on an aerial, you only need a aerial for Freeview. Freesat and Freesat from Sky are both satellite systems from a dish. For either satellite system you just need a power socket and a feed from the LNB (a twin feed if you want the PVR functions).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Oh dear, I can't even read these things properly. I was thinking Human Foxsat was a very strange name!
But other than my dimness - that's great thank you very much for your help.
