Thanks. Is it likely to get worse do you think? I'm trying to determine whether its safe to drive the car as it is between now and taking it to the garage.

Just had a call from the garage and they've said the problem is an Ignition Coil. I don't know alot about cars so just looking for some advice as to whether an Ignition Coil is likely to cause the problems I've been having.

Sounds entirely plausible. An ignition coil which is failing or fails will cause the intermittent loss of power and feel like the car is changing gear when it's down to the loss of power giving no momentum.

Compared to a new gearbox it's a very cheap fix (few hundred max) and could solve your problems.

    Thanks :) They have quoted £160 plus vat and it'll be ready by 5.30 today :) I'm so pleased it's a cheap(ish) fix :D

lot of money for a coil pack but its not the hitting of things under the bonnet, its the knowing what to hit that you pay for:)
you did right to take the advice given because hopefully youve fixed your car before you did serious damage
    well done

Not a bad price if it's a decent coil pack, and not a knock off.
