I have cooked a whole chicken in the slow cooker before. I just put some carrots and onions in the bottom of the cooker and put the chicken on top and cooked on high for about 6 hours. I am sure that putting the potatoes in the cooker would be fine as it creates quite a lot of liquid when cooking.

The chicken will fall apart easily when you take it out of the slow cooker so be warned but it tastes yummy.

Do I need to add anything (apart from the chicken, obviously :D)?

Water, oil or anything? I would like to try it tomorrow. And how long and at what setting (low or high) should I do it?

    Please help, thanks :)

We just put the Chicken in and nothing else.

    Never had a problem.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I sometimes use water and sometimes stock. I just put it in on low and it's ready when I get home from work.

It'll fall apart though so don't expect to be able to "present" the whole chicken at the table.

We do this all the time, it's such an easy and delicious dish. I sometimes just put the chicken in. Sometimes I pop a quartered lemon inside it and sprinkle thyme on top. Both methods taste nice. I never add any liquid.

I recently tried a new recipe: chopped onion inside the chicken, butter spread on top and sprinkled with lemon juice, thyme, salt and paprika. The kids said it was the nicest chicken they'd ever tasted.

Cooking times in my crockpot slow cooker are about 4 hours on high or 8-10 hours on low. You may need to tweak the times, depending how hot your slow cooker cooks at.

Thanks so much everyone :) I am wanting it to fall apart, so presenting it isn't an issue, the more tender the better.
I want to serve it with rice, veggies and salad.

If I put it on low from 8-4 will that be too long, or OK?

8-4 should be okay, I usually do mine from 7-6 as that's when I'm out working/commuting. It's never been too dry or tasted overcooked.

It really depends how 'hot' your slow cooker is and how big the chicken is. Just check it's cooked properly, then enjoy. :)
