Estate agents sold sign

I have been in my property for almost three months and despite numerous call to the estate agents they have not removed their sold sign. How long am I expected to have this attached to my gate post? Am I legally allowed to remove it myself?

Remove it. Put it on the floor.

    Write them a letter.

They do it to keep advertising that they've sold something. You could complain to trading standards about it and they WILL get it removed.

They do weigh a bit though so mind you don't drop it on your foot!

Our sold sign was removed before we completed, I wondered if there was a shortage? :-)

When we moved into a rented house that had also been for sale we just took the sign down and advised the agent that it was down the side of the house and they could collect it at their own convenience.

I wouldn't keep it up at all.

    Yes, remove it.

It's on your property, and you don't have any contract with the agent which requires you to keep it in place.

However - it probably belongs to a sign contractor who works for the EA, so wouldn't recommend destroying it. At the end of the day - someone, somewhere has paid for it to be made, and they'll get miffed at you if you do.

Keep it at the back of your garage, in the garden, or similar place and write again to the EA requesting its uplift.

Not sure how long is reasonable to wait before you CAN destroy or dispose of it? What's the consensus?

Agents use a board contractor to erect and remove boards, they don't do it themselves. It's completely reasonable to call the agent and ask them to have their contractor remove the board within a reasonable timescale.

If they fail to do so, I'd call them again and tell them you will remove and dispose of it if it isn't done within 24 hours.

  • Any board that is erected on a property that has sold and completed must be removed within 14 days of completion (The Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) (England) Regulations 2007)

Remove it and dispose of it yourself, they have had their chance.
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

Take it down, store it in your shed/garage, write to the EA stating that unless it is collected in 14 working days, you will dispose of it.

How far are the agents from you? Alternatively, if you pass their offices on a regular basis, chuck it in the door on the way!

Surely you cannot be so compliant that you are afraid of the consequences of removing an Estate Agents board?
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • You can remove it, but you cannot destroy it as it belongs to someone else and you have a 'bailment' responsibility (google it).

The poster above talking about the 14 day limit is right - write to them threatening to complain to trading standards quoting the relevant law, it's what I did to get a forest of fake signs removed that had been around for several months.

Remove it, stick it in a corner somewhere, call them and then if its not eventually collected, bin it.

I took the one on my house down the day i moved in, asked for it to be collected and it never was so it ended up at the tip.

To be honest its probably cheaper to make new signs than to spend the time and petrol going to fetch them. All they are is a couple of corrugated plastic panels nailed to a bit of timber. The timber is probably about £3 and the panels maybe the same. If they've had plenty of warning - skip it. If anyone comes looking for it you can always say it just disappeared one day and you thought they'd finally got around to picking it up.
