Ive no idea if im posting this in right place so apologies for that. Im looking for some advice.

My mother purchased a bag of Haribo marshmallows for my daughter roughly 2 weeks ago, she cant remember which shop between 2 she got them from. Anyway last night when my partner took the bag out the cupboard he noticed a dead wasp in it. Im obviously horrified that i could easily have opened this bag and gave it to my daughter. Fortunately this bag is still sealed and obviously want to complain. Ive been on Haribo's website bu would like some advice as to how to write my complaint and should i be contacting anyone else?

Any help is much appreciated

Just send it to Haribo with a letter, you don't need to add any drama about "what if"

I found a dead earwig in my loaf of bread last week. Picked it out and carried on eating it.

    Dear Haribo,

I recently purchased the enclosed packet of marshmallows. As you can see it is still sealed and contains a dead wasp.

    Thanx and cheerio

I suppose you could write to the RSPCA and see if suffocating a wasp is punishable. But apart from that it's fairly obvious what happened; a wasp managed to get in the bag before it was sealed so you don't need to complain to anybody else.

Having been a fan of your products for many years, as are my children we was disappointed to find the packet to be unedible -- however we do understand sometimes these things happened and would ask kindly if you would replace the bag for us for a fresh packet.

My children (and husband) have also cheekily asked if you are feeling generous to also send a complimentary bag of ____ and ____.

    [Address Here]

    Thanx and cheerio

Sorry, just a minor modification :D
  • i'd also send the wasp for DNA tests to make sure it is foreign, you don't want to accuse it of being a foreign object if it's a common English wasp
  • Take a picture, then hand the wasp and bag into Environmental Health, then complain to Haribo.

You will get something from them and they will get a prod to see if they can stop it happening again.

The main thing is no harm has been done.

The reason I say hand it into Environmental Health is I had a wasp in a bottle of wine that was bottled in Chilie, sent it back to the manufacturer who had it "identified" as a Common European wasp, which it clearly wasn't by the British Museum (I'm a scientist as well so smelled a rat when the letter from the entomologists mentioned yellow and black banding which it wasn't, it was red after spending god knows how long pickling in my Merlot!). All I wanted was a new bottle of the same wine and something to say that I had half eaten a foreign insect but I guess that may have put them in bother if it was someone going after money. I got new wine a ten quid gift voucher and a half apology.

Definetely, absolutely take it to your local Environmental Health department. in ALL situations where you find foreign objects in food do this.

If you deal directly with manufacturers, restaurants or supermarkets etc you will get an apology and a few vouchers. This is peanuts to a large organisation. EH have prosecution powers and can levy huge fines for this kind of thing. If the bag is sealed DO NOT OPEN IT as then there will be an element of doubt the wasp got in after it was opened. I know this sounds like stating the obvious but people do these things.

I believe that Haribo is a German company and has manufacturing plants across Europe. I think they have at least one UK factory in Pontefract, so DNA testing might well be required to establish the nationality of the wasp concerned.
