My mate said that place is pretty bad when you need to claim. I'll ask him for specifics.

Do look, please. Many others seem to have quite different opinion on it.

Best place to insure your phone?

I just emailed the friend that I mentioned above. Here's what he had to say:
I was with Protect my bubble. They’re terrible. Fine if you don’t need to claim, but literally the worst company ever with claim handling. It took months to get a replacement phone even though they promise to replace within 48 hours (apparently that’s only if they have one in stock – which they never do). They are impossible to get in touch with. If you need to claim they make you pay the rest of your policy, plus a £50 excess, so you are paying over £100 and they then cancel the policy so you’re not insured for the rest of the year.

They don’t respond to emails, ever, they have maybe two, three people in a call centre so you are waiting for about an hour to get through. I had to call them on numerous occasions and only spoke to two or three different people.

They also have every rule imaginable to try and get out of having to replace your phone. If you have any other type of insurance that you could possibly claim on then they won’t pay out and will tell you to use that instead.

Also, they never have the phones in stock to send you a replacement. They tried to make me go and buy it from three as a replacement phone (which takes 3-4 weeks to come), then send them the bill so they can refund me by check. Which means I would have been out of pocket for 6 weeks or so.

Basically never EVER insure with them! And don’t let anyone else do it! I complained formally to them and to the Financial Ombudsman service and got compensation back but it really wasn’t worth the stress.
  • thanks guys this is a real help =)

Would you mind letting me know what you do go with? I'm debating whether to insure mine at the moment.

If you are 'clumsy' get an OtterBox Defender to protect it. MUCH cheaper!
  • Yes can agree NEVER go with protect your bubble, they are possibly the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with! Took around 6 weeks for them to even accept I owned my phone although apple and tesco both agreed that I did they still insisted on having me send them numerous different bits of proof which they rejected until by chance I found the receipt that apple had given me when they replaced the phone.

Then after all of that and a conference call with tesco a few days later (more than they stated it would take and a few phone calls from myself everyday until i got an answer) they rejected my claim because apperently I hadn't taken enough precautino to protect my phone. It was within the inside pocket of a bag placed directly next to me on the beach when somebody managed to grab it without my realising and I hadn't used the phone at all while on the beach so there was no reason for the bag to be stolen for said phone. Anyway their terms and conditions only state they can reject a claim if the phone was left unnattended which it was not because it was within arms reach. The letter they sent me did not make any sense well actually it did up to the point when they were trying to explain the clause they were using to get out of a payout and then the words were all jumbled and some were missing i.e. they couldn't even be bothered to explain why they thought it wasn't effectivly cared for. In this letter they offered me a chance to appeal if I had any new information which could change their opinion although I had already given them every detail and to be honest I'm pretty sure in their small print somewhere I read something about you can't change the details of the claim otherwise it's classed as fraud which wouldnt any new information be changing the details? So i decided to skip the appeals procedure and go straight to the ombudsman who have sent a complaint on my behalf, this give them 8 weeks to review my claim and change their outcome however 4 and abit weeks in an I have heard nothing. So nearly 3 months after my phone was stolen I still in the process of trying to get payment for a perfectly valid claim. It really isn't worth the £7 I pay a month which they are still taking may I just say for a phone I don't even have and I can't cancel it until the claim has been sorted. Bloody fantastic!
  • My step dad has insured it through his bank for me :)
