How to help him

In most places I've worked, it would be a disciplinary offence to do so.
I think you are reading that the OP will take money from work and pay him, I read it as giving him the money from his pocket - which is not an offence to do.
Most workplaces will give an employee a sub if they have c0cked up your wages - you just need to ask HR/wages or your manager. My husband has had one when then 'forgot' to pay him 2 weeks money. HR send an email to the wages department and the money was in his account the next day. Every work place I have worked at, will sub you if they have made an error.0 -
Really. I've always seen it as primarily to avoid the situation where a senior colleague 'borrows' ('extorts?') money from juniors, so a financial transaction rather than being 'invited' to give sexual favours if you like. However it's also 'dangerous' going the other way IMO.paddedjohn wrote: »really? sounds rather odd. you cant lend a friend £20 outside of work? i would lend him the money just to see how far they could take it if it was between myself and a work friend and off work premises.
Not to say it didn't happen - one of my managers had to borrow a fiver off me once and I didn't remind them of this!
I read it the same way as you, and I still stand by the fact that it would certainly have been a disciplinary offence in some of the places I've worked at.blue_monkey wrote: »I think you are reading that the OP will take money from work and pay him, I read it as giving him the money from his pocket - which is not an offence to do.
That would be a better way to proceed. Much better.blue_monkey wrote: »Most workplaces will give an employee a sub if they have c0cked up your wages - you just need to ask HR/wages or your manager. I'd say the OP needs to maintain a professional relationship here: he can't help knowing that there may be problems at home, but IMO it would be better to offer this chap support in getting the wages paid quickly, and then offer to find out what support the company can give if he's in a difficult situation at home and needs to move out - just as you would, say, if someone broke down in a line management session and said they were in an abusive relationship and needed to get out fast.
Then - again IMO - it's never mentioned again unless the young man himself brings it up, and even then it's kept professional.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I'm confused, OP you say this guy HASN'T had time off approved, yet everyone is commenting on him being short of money, how does that work? Has be had time off already and it's been recorded incorrectly, and so not received holiday pay? Or is Dad upset they cannot do something planned for those days off?
Either way, I'm guessing this guy is an adult, and his dads reaction seems way over the top. I have been friendly with managers, and those I have managed at different jobs, and I see nothing wrong in supporting him, as a friend if he asks for it. Stepping in for him at work without him formally requesting it would be going too far, but on a personal level, be there if he needs you. Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!0
