Really stupid question - when to pay rent

Starting my first 'adult' job Monday and it will be the first time I only have one source of income. I pay rent to my OH so am flexible about when I pay it and I get paid at the end of each month.

I'm trying to work out the easiest way to do the budget.

Should I pay my rent at the start of each month, meaning that this month I will have to use my savings but for October's I can use my pay which has only just come in, meaning I then know how much I have left for the month? or should I pay my rent at the end of the month which means I will be current (i.e. Sept rent paid by Sept pay) but will have to ensure the money is left over at the end of the month?

I know this is a very silly question but it is doing my head in.

Also do people tend to keep only that month's budget money in their current account and keep the rest separate?

Never had to really budget before!

  • I would try to get all the essentials paid a day or two after payday then everything that is in your account is yours to save or do whatever you like with.

Of course not all companies are that convenient and say they have to take money on certain days in the month and cannot change these with direct debits.
