this happened to me a few weeks ago only i wanted the exact opposite i wanted auto login and no welcome screen. This was after i installed.net framework.
to get what you need i think you should try enabling the guest account and the going to the run command and typing control userpasswords2 then select the box users must enter a username and password to logon.
this may get what you need but not 100% sure as i was trying to get the exact opposite.
EDIT: after seeing the last two posts it def was .net framework that does this and control userpasswords2 should fix this. google for more info0 -
Start > Run > then typein the following control userpasswords2
check the box for "Users must enter a user name and password for this computer."Ex forum ambassador

Oh heck Ill have a cup of tea and think about it
I'm not sure its worth twiddling and messing about too much in case I mess something up. Just so long as there is no problem with it logging on without any user and just saying welcome. I just dont want anything to go wrong later on I dont really like net framework isnt it buggy? Maybe if I got rid of net framework and just installed the hardrive without that retrospect express hd? it might be that program that needed it
Thanx

it really shouldnt mess anything up and if you dont like what it does then just type control userpasswords2 again and uncheck the box.
if there any other hiccups for unforseen reasons why it doesnt work then we can help.
but no there are no problems with not having that screen. i personallly am the only user on this computer so dont need it. in fact it annoys me i cant just flick the computer on and have it load compleetely by itself. but you may want to have to enter user/password to keep your files secure0 -
I never actually tried going for the password option in control panel though would that not work now and I'd have to do it the way you put above?
I just didnt want to try it that way first and then find I couldnt boot back up coz it didnt show in the welcome page
I might try to get some info on this maxtor hardrive in case I can do away with net framework and just have the drivers rather than the other thing that goes with itThanx

I'm not sure if the control passwords2 tip works for all XP editions. If you click the Start button does it say Windows XP Home or Professional on the side menu?
Another way to enable the Welcome screen is to click on:-
Start - Settings - Control Panel - User Accounts.
There is an option for "Change the way users log on or off", and make sure the box is checked if you want the Welcome screen option.0 -
its won xp professional does that make a difference?
thanx I have tried the change the way to log off thing too and things just stay the sameThanx
