Someone has loaned my daughter a laptop for study since she had hers stolen in burglary at the weekend. It had been set to say welcome and my daughters name and click username to log on but its now just saying welcome. It logs on anyway but have we done anything to make this happen that we can change back again? The last time I noticed it still with her name was after windows live messenger had been installed and it then said you have 64 unread emails on the welcome page next to her name and when going over that it gave her email address and mine aswell as we both checked mail on the same messenger but now its gone and just says welcome.
We did also put a hardrive in and had to instal that so not sure if that had anything to do with it. For some reason we have now got micro net framework installed which is something we were not going to instal as ts so big but it suddenly started going on by critical automatic installation would that be required by the hardrive as it was around the time of installing that? The hardrive had a choice of whether to instal retrospect express hd or just the drivers is it nes to instal that? We did instal it but wondred if it was really necessary

Quite a lot of questions there.....
So, are you saying there is only one user setup on the PC ? - and if you turn it on it automatically logs in as her ?? - I think thats what you've said, if so you can go to "user accounts" under control panel to add more users. I believe if there is one user with no password it just defaults to logging in as that person, not 100% on that though.
Critical automatic installation ? - are you referring to Microsoft update? - some may argue but the best thing to do is let Microsoft update download and install anything it likes. If it's something else could you be a little more specific.
Hope that helps0 -
Thankyou,
No, there is one user as admin (my daughter) and one guest that isnt used. It was set somehow to when it started up say welcome 'daughters name' with click on profile to log in but now its gone it just says welcome and nothing else and just logs on. She didnt use a password before either she just had to click on her name.
It is set to instal critical updates automatically and before adding the hardrive it was not counting micro net framework as critical but when installing the hardrive it suddenly started installing net framework as a critical update and the fixes for it so we wondered if it might be because she had also selected to instal the retrospect express hd aswell as the drivers that required the net framework, if so is the retrospect really necessary? as she had a choice of installing just the drivers or the retrospect express hd aswell. If its not nes she could uninstall the retrospect and maybe get rd of net framework againThanx

ctrl + Alt + Del will bring up Task manager, the last tab on the right says "users"
highlight the current logged on user and Click on the "logoff" tab this should take you back to the user menu where you can choose which user to log on toEx forum ambassador

hmm...
try logging off and then see if the two users pop up on the login screen, and login as guest, restart and see, I've nbever seen it happen when 2 users are setup.
do you mean .net framework? - you need this so dont uninstall it, it's not doing any harm.0 -

No users pop up on the login screen there isnt actually a log in screen anymore it just says welcome. There was a log in screen before but she just had to clock on her name to go in thats all as she hadnt set a password, There wasnt any choice either of her or guest just her own name but I just noticed it said guest in the user account in control panel
Yes it must be net framework or something but I thought as its so big not to bother unless its needed as it slows things down does it?Thanx

Not 100% sure what you asking... but I think you are saying that you use to have a welcome screen where you could select the user and now you don't get that?
If so look at the following link which explains how to turn the welcome screen on and off.

I will have a look to see if theres anything there but I know how to turn on and off the welcome page its just the contents of whats on it thats missing.
Before the welcome page said welcome and daughters name with picture she clicked on the name without password and it logged in
Now it just says the word welcome on its own nothing else, no users or pictures or anything and it just starts up the laptop
The guest account is switched off, only account is my daughters as administrator and at present the welcome page is turned on.
Just trying to get it back to what is was before as its changed on its own
Would installing netframework have changed this? or an external hardrive?
microsoft live messenger was installed and after restarting then it was ok and saying how many mails there were unread. could it be a micro live messenger setting? we used 2 different msn accounts on the micro live.
After that the hardrive and netframework were installedThanx

external harddrive would not. Don't know enough about netframework to say.
Have you tried creating another user? I thought the user selection was only available when you had more than one user.
When you first got the laptop was it just your daughter's user and no other users or was it your daughter's user and the guest account?... as it is possible something you have installed has disabled the guest account for security reasons and thus making your daughters user the only active account on the laptop so automatically loaded.0 -
I dont know for sure but I think it was just her account as administrator and guest as off from beginning. I havent turned it off anyway myself at anytime and shes not actually used it yet I'm sorting it out for her before she comes back to pick it up in a few days shes at uni.
Could try creating a guest account but I'm not used to xp I'm windows 98 so didnt want to mess too much without being sure
Besides that there was never any actual selection in the first place on the welcome page apart from her own name, her other one was like that tooThanx
