I doubt you're as unusual as they'd have you believe. These are tough times for a lot of people.
The thing is, there was peer pressure when I was a kid too. There were "have"s and "have not"s but my parents were young and struggling to make ends meet and when they couldn't afford something, they just couldn't afford it. I understood that (eventually!) Sure, I had tantrums and demanded stuff and proclaimed I was the only child in the world not to have one, but they told me they'd love to buy it for me but they couldn't and I was welcome to get a paper round and save for it. I think it did me good, tbh. Some of the people I grew up with were given everything they demanded and let's just say they're not the ones I want to spend a lot of time with...

My eldest was desperate for a particular phone last year and got himself a part-time job so he could go halves with us to get it. The twins won't be expecting laptops (they've been told often enough it's not on the cards at the moment), but, like the other poster, I'd love to grab a bargain and surprise them!
This post crossed with mine, so I don't want you to think it's having a go at you because it's not at all.
There's a world of difference between trying to provide something desired but not expected as a surprise, and struggling to fulfill unrealistic demands and expectations. Bravo to you for encouraging your son to work for what he wanted.
Like I said, I grew up with a few people who got everything they wanted, (putting their parents in debt), and I don't think it did them any good. In fact, I de-friended one of them on facebook a few days ago. She's just unbearably self-centred and foul.
By the way, you think twins is bad? A friend's cousin had premature twin girls but she wanted a boy so they tried for another baby and got another set of twins (also born early and poorly for a while)! (One boy and one girl the second time). I really don't know how she copes!

Thanks Lawrie
So I buy it , go to CS and say the SEL was £1 and they have charged me £8.
If I get an unhelpful CS person what do I do ? Should I ring T CS at Head Office from the store ?
Yes. The very least that will happen is that the CS will refund you the £7 so you paid what you should. If your happy with that, then fine.
If you want DTD, so £14 back, you may find that they just do it automatically, they often do on smaller amounts.
If they don't, I normally say something like "I was stood here for so long waiting for you(you will always be waiting for them to check the labels) and saw your sign on the back saying you will refund twice the erro, how does that work?" or similar and that then jogs them into giving it to you. I had one today with some wine and was given my jsut the difference refund in cash and asked about DTD to be told it needing authorising by the manager who hadn't come down yet. She then went and spoke to someone else, then manager appeared then got the DTD refunded too.
I always try and be polite and don't jump to ringing CS straightaway, just ask for it nicely, and see what you get.0 -

No problem. I realised the posts appeared out of synch.:D
You should hear my husband and I going on about the spoilt little darlings we see with the latest "must have" gadgets, etc. We must sound likes candidates for the grumpy old men/women TV show! :rotfl:
As for 2 sets of twins! ( They do say that once you've had one multiple pregnancy, your chances of another one reduces from 1 in 80 to 1 in 8!!)0 -

I must sound like that a lot of the time too. The thing is, I reckon that a lot of what the Grumpy Old Men/Women say is actually very true!! :rotfl:
If I ever doubted I'm getting old, that pretty much confirms it.

Argh! My nearest Tesco Extra never seems to stock any of these great items.
I've looked for the Donghli 4 Slice toaster, but they only stock it in black. They only have the T&G hairdryers, not the straighteners. I've managed to find the right model number for a printer... Canon I think, but that was £stupid! (On a side note, both this extra store and my local Tesco don't seem to sell Parazone at all (the 30p BOGOF deal) and Quaver packs of 18 (I think) which were reported at £1).
The scanner in Thr33 Br1dges is busted (wires hanging from it), so I have to resort to going through the self-service checkouts which is not really good when I wanna check a lot of items. I don't feel comfortable asking staff for a whole list of items 'cause then I feel like they'll think I'm casing the joint.
Any MSErs nearby who's up for meeting for "metaphorical coffee" (can't stand the stuff myself, but I understand the concept lol) to show me the ropes and help me seek out these awesome bargains?? I live between Br1ght0n and Crawl3y so I can get to the Shor3ham and Thr33 Br1dges stores quite easily.
Besides learning all your great tips and tricks, it's always nice to make new friends.Proud to be dealing with my debts!0 -
Hi there, I got the Lumie bodyclock for £10 at Winch£ster (Yay!! No more miserable me in the morning!!!)
Also popped to And#ver where the tech/elec staff were very helpful, scanned loads of laptops and netbooks for me, but there were no bargains. They said they'd not had any bargain laptops - she'd had a few very cheap cameras but all gone and there'd been a lot of toys reduced but best were all gone. They had a few bits and pieces left but nothing amazing.
I did pick up the treseme hairdryer for £2.86 though, so was happy with the trip
Only just opened my lumie bodyclock tonight, ready to set for the morning and its all broken inside. My feet hurt, I'm bargained right out and I wanted to wake with the sunrise. I don't know whether to laugh or cry!0 -
Hi everyone,
Well done on all todays bargains!!!
I never thought to look in the baby aisle for the bodyclocks!!! That was about the only aisle I didn't go down today!!!
I went to the Irl@m store today wandered round downstairs (nothing there) before heading upstairs to the electrical department had a quick walk about and couldn't find any of the Sat Navs or cameras listed!! I went and asked the really nice guy at the desk about cheap laptops and he asked how cheap I wanted!! I said anythng from £160 down! He went off to check but came back empty handed!!
I then noticed they had 3 sale bins filled with allsorts of bits and bobs so I had a good rummage in each!! Found a 4GB Sony USB for £1.30 - the only one there or I would have bought more!!! A HDMI cable with bendy ends for £2.50 and a cassette adaptor for MP3 players for £1.50 both the only ones!! Was sooooo chuffed with these as I needed all 3 and the prices were great!! I must have been rummaging for about an hour!!!!! Haha! There was so much stuff in each bin that i had to half empty the bins in to my trolley to be able too look properly!!!!
I was just checking out the Disney BOGOF section before heading to pay when the guy from the desk came round the corner looking for me with a laptop in each hand!! He said he had just found some out the back and they were mine if I wanted them!!!
I took two of the HP's he had found - they were £149 each and my Dad and my brother's girlfriend had asked me to get them a laptop if I found anymore!!!! Was so chuffed!!
He had another 2 HP's and a Dell all the same price but he put them out on a shelf with a SEL of £149 so I doubt they would have been there long!! I pointed them out to 2 guys who were obviously looking for laptops and a lady who had been rummaging in the sale bins with me and mentioned she was after one for her daughter!!
Really pleased with today's bargains!!!
The laptops are both HP one was a g6-1088 and the other was a g6-1080
The USB is a SONY MIRCOVAULT 4gb USB Flash Drive - bc 027242780545
The HDMI cable is a SONY HIGH SPEED HDMI cable - bc 4905524577754
The cassette adapter is a BELKIN DRIVECONNECTLISTEN Cassette adapter - bc 722868487693
HTH, good luck anyone heading out again tomorrow!!
Jo
xxxThanks to all the comp posters, you are brilliant! :T0 -
(This isn't intended as a dig at anyone in particular, just an observation that's been occurring to me often over the past couple of weeks)
Is it just me or is anyone else surprised that it seems to be taken for granted that children must have their own laptop these days? I'm not a parent so maybe I am out of touch but I didn't buy a computer until I was 21, and then it was a cheap desktop which I needed as I was at university and living so far out that I couldn't use the library computers. I didn't buy a laptop until I was working as a self-employed IT consultant and needed one, (aged around 28 or 29). When it finally died and I couldn't afford to replace it, I went back to using a cheap desktop.
I know we rely on the internet a lot these days but it amazes me what children apparently need. I'm forever seeing wanted posts on freecycle looking for games consoles, laptops, iphones, ipods etc. for people's kids. Some even say they have to be the latest, top spec. model otherwise the child will be bullied!
I'm vaguely boggled. However did I survive without these things?
I get what you are saying but things are very different nowadays
Scottish schools have a system in place in which class work/homework are put onto the GLO website. alot of their homework now requires them to have access to internet for research, office programs such as powerpoint, word, spreadsheets etc. Now we do have internet access at home and one laptop (obviously the one i am using now). My eldest daughter is too young to get a job however she is a dancer and can win prizemoney, she also helps out family with chores to earn a bit cash - she bought the laptop i am using now (2nd hand) for herself but when my own computer packed in she gave it to me as she knew i needed it for my own work/studies. She regularly uses the local librarys computers to complete her homework assignments, facebook etc etc which she does enjoy as she goes with classmates, but with winter making an early appearance and its cold wet and windy not to mention dark earlier its not quite as enjoyable!! obviously there are times when they are able to use mine at home.
For my 2 girls it is more a case of they would LIKE a laptop rather than WANT one - if i had been lucky enough to have snagged one of the bargain price laptops there would have been screams of sheer joy come Christmas morning because they would have truly appreciated it. I am very lucky in the knowledge that no matter what ends up under the tree this Christmas my girls will be very grateful.
I know your post was not directed at me - but i just wanted to point out to yourself and others that its not always a case of kids demanding extravagant presents and their wimpy parents putting themselves into debt to cater to their every whim. Sometimes its a case of parents appreciating the fact that their kids are not brats who demand everything their friends have and just wishing that they could give them a really nice surprise. which is why i will be searching every tesco in my area as often as possible and also trying to track down any other bargains on laptops/netbooks between now and chrsitmas - but i know my financial limits!!!0 -
Was in tesco, stood gossiping to a friend and a member of staff asked if i wanted a hoover for £11, I bought 1 for the kids to keep in the loft, it is a samsung airtrack canister vacuum cleaner think the model is sc4570, it was a sel of £44? reduced from £111?. not seen it mentioned on here.
I have been looking for the lumi bodyclocks for a pressie, not found none in the north east stores i have been in, phoned the helpline & supposed to be none in the ne, so if any 1 sees some can they plz post i am willing to travel to get one.0
