Have you set your PC to boot from the CD/DVD Drive first, in the BIOS - boot order CD then HDD etc ...

Sorry misread your post - you already have it installed - doh!!
Check BIOS for boot order and also that drive is detected

If you are installing an OS on this drive, do above then boot from CD - if all ok install will see the unpartitioned disk and you can create your install partitions etc.

If it is an extra drive and assuming Windows XP it will pick up the drive - if it is unformatted then you'll need to partition format.
    Right click on My Computer
    Select Manage
    Goto Disc Management
    You should see it listed

Have the CD already in the drive - power down with the CD in the drive and then restart - it should confirm you want to boot from CD etc

  • A quick google shows the problem "glue parts error" to be due to you using a restore CD from your PC Manufacturer rather than a normal Windows disk.

You say you have operating system discs. Can you describe what they look like / what they have written on for us please.

Also, what's your level of PC competency like as the guide I found online requires you to use boot-disks and fdisk to create partitions manually. Would you be comfortable doing that? No problem if not, there's a different way! :)

I know bits about computers but not much my discs are the ones i had to create of my computer when i bought it as they did not give discs its all on the system. It is the restore cd i got with my computer
  • That'll be why then.

Look on your PC case, is there a sticker with a Windows Product Key on it? Is it Windows XP? If so, is it Home or Professional edition?

Best bet is to have an ask about your friends for it anyone has an OEM disc (windows CD that came with their computer) of the version you require and use that CD to install but your own product key. Dell ones are normally a solid colour with plain text on while non-dell ones come with a Windows XP hologram on the disc.

When it gets to activation, it will fail due to a different companies OEM disc being used but telephone activation should go through fine.

This will be the easiest way for you and will ensure that you get a "proper" windows install rather than the modified ones that system manufacturers supply!
