Toshiba Qosmio PCI express error - help!!

The other night I used my qosmio G40 10e to watch a saved film. At 3am it switched on (from sleep mode) said it was updateing or something to that effect (I was half asleep).
Anyway the next morning I switched on to a black screen with PCI EXPRESS error.

Took it to local PC repair shop who cleaned it and checked internal connections but no joy.

Toshiba not helpful and talking in the £hundreds with no guarantee.

any ideas?

can you boot into BIOS??? If so, change boot order to boot from CD first, and try Hiren's boot disk/puppy linux/etc. At least that'll tell you if it's hw or sw related :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Sorry, not sure how to do that but I have tried pressing F2 when I switch it on and I get a choice of drives to boot from. there is what I assume to be HD 1 HD2 which it skips past, CD, floppy, 2 monitor icons and a usb stick.

As you can tell I'm a PC illiterate who, thanks to MSE got a really nice laptop very cheap a few years ago.

Anyway, does that give you any ideas. I dont seem to remember getting cd back up disk when I bought it.

you'll need to download and burn hiren's on another pc, and use that cd to boot the poorly tosh :)

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

download from here, save it to desktop and extract the .ISO image...very important. Then, burn that .ISO image to cd using something like imgburn or nero which burn .ISO files. Use this to then boot the lappy :)

Hi many thanks for the advice but unfortunately it didnt work. Whilst the CD did seem to be loading for a few seconds it still went to 'PCI express error'. No matter which drive I tell it to boot from, it does the same.

Any other ideas or do you think I should chop it up and ebay it?

Its a shame cos I really like the size of screen and the sound quality but my budget would not stretch anywhere near a similar replacement.

make sure you've got no usb/flash cards/etc in it before trying again. If it does it again I'd be inclined to whip the hdd out and try again....

Thanks GunJack I did try again but still the same response. Sorry to sound stupid but are you saying to open the case and just unplug the hard drive and then close back up and then start up the laptop again?

yes, and set it to boot from the cd drive with the hirens bootdisk in it. It probably will still be the same, and then you're probably looking at a motherboard fault.....

Apparently a known issue with the Nvidia modules.

    A related thread.
