I always find the local butcher to be cheaper than the supermarket too.

I'm lucky that local butchers actually outnumber supermarkets around here

Butchers are running a business and thinking of their profit margins whereas the butchers in supermarkets just want to do a good job.

It's mad, this is the fourth 24 hour Tesco being built all within a 1 mile radius with an Asda, Morrisons and a Sainsbury's as well. There is only a matter of time before high street butchers, Newsagents, Bakery's and electrical shops close down

Our local butcher is great too. My husband loves the pre-cooked chicken he sells, and we buy it several times a week. After a while he pointed out that his pre-cooked chicken is way more expensive than his fresh chicken (which is true, but even the cooked chicken is a lot cheaper than Supermarket frozen meat!). I told him that we'd tried cooking our own but couldn't get it to taste as good as his pre-cooked stuff, so he gave us step by step instructions for how to get it to taste just right!

His pastries are legendary in the area, too - I have a friend that travels from several towns away just to buy them.

I don't get why people have such a big hang up over supermarkets. They tend to be higher quality and lower price (yes they also do lower quality as well and therefore more choice). This is why people shop there and prefer them to the local shops.

Tescos offer a service whereby they can do deliveries in unmarked small vans so people who are snobbish can still buy this food, but pretend to their neighbours that they go to local markets and butchers to buy their food :).

Yes, I do agree with the disappointment of the change in high streets, and they should perhaps be given suport to compete e.g. Lower business rates etc. But i am not willing to pay higher prices for lower quality and this why supermarkets are so popular.

I like my local butcher, meat is off their own farm, nothing is too much trouble, to cut and prep the way you want it, plus he always calls me 'young lady'............:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

  • All the local butchers are Halal and obviously don't sell pork, so its the supermarket or nothing locally.

Supermarkets don't automatically close butchers and other local shops. It is people choosing to shop in the supermarket that closes local shops. If people didn't want the supermarket, then why do they shop there?

Unfortunately this is true... you can add 'local planners accepting backhanders' to the reasons too

Which butcher are you talking about? I think you'll find they're all different
