Local butchers is still my first choice

I went to my local butcher's today and I was still able to buy 1 egg. I was beaming from ear to ear, my only sadness is that Tesco's have bought the old Kwik Save at the corner and it should be opened February 2012.
If the butcher closes down it will be the end of the friendly butcher and the services he has provided for over 40 years.
No more single eggs
No more de-boned full chicken and a number of other things that he is known for.

It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

Cool. It reminds me of newsagents that used to sell single fags for 10p. Very popular with kids, I seem to recall."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Butchers meat is always so much better than supermarket stuff too.0

It is, and usually cheaper as well.

I guess it depends on the butcher's and the supermarket. I bought some pancetta the other day from a local butcher's. It was awful - truly inedible. Waitrose's is much better."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
And the local butcher is always happy to give our dogs a meaty bone....0

Have to say, I also find supermarket butchers much better. Went to a local butchers once and the meat was very fatty and tasted of a lower quality meat you buy in Tesco's. Whereas go to the butchers counter in supermarkets and I have had melt in your mouth beef.
Butchers are running a business and thinking of their profit margins whereas the butchers in supermarkets just want to do a good job.
I know there are probably some excellent small independent butchers, just not found any yet.0 -
I've gone into my local butchers & bought like,2 sausages, rashers of bacon ect for breakfast in the past.I like you can see the meat you buy,it's not clingwrapped so it sweats. How many times have you opened a pack of supermarket meat & it's gray underneath or the paper pad is red with blood?
My butcher does a wider range of meat than the supermarket imho, plus you get a more friendly service as well.I've ordered things in the past, like minced lamb, caul fat which you can't do at a supermarket.0 -

Sure you've got that sentence the right way round?
I doubt very much a butcher in a supermarket has any say whatsoever in where they buy their meat0 -
My local butchers charges £14 (yes, £14) per kilogram of pork shoulder. In Morrisons, these are £2.95 per kilogram at the moment. The butcher there will chop these up exactly as I want them, just like the local butcher.
I tried another butcher and asked for 500g of pork mince. I ended up with 575g, costing almost £4. It was very very fatty. In Waitrose, pork mince costs £2.20ish per 500g and is really lean.
As you can tell, I don't think the food from our local butchers is any nicer than the supermarket. Plus the staff in Morrisons are much more friendly than our arrogant butcher.
Remember that the butcher is operating for the same reason as the supermarket: to make a profit.0 -
Local butcher + farm shop = cheaper than our local Tesco.0
