Help - moving house VM dilemma

As you can see I'm new to this forum, but I really need some advice about my internet (and phone) provider.
We currently have VM phone and 20Mb broadband via cable. We've just started the house-moving process, but a quick google suggests that our new property (only 1/2 mile away) doesn't have any cable services available.
So we need to decide what to do - I suppose our options are a BT phone line and a choice of ISPs who use a BT line as a basis for their supply - or have I missed something?
The BT website says we would only be able to get BT Total Broadband at a speed somewhere between 1.5Mb abd 4Mb - does this mean even if we went with someone else it would still be the same speed? We need the best broadband we can get as the whole reason we are moving is to gain space for an office as my partner has started to work form home.
Lastly - I'm guessing the only was I could keep my (8 year old) VM (NTL) e-mail addresses is to get broadband from VM via the phone line (they say it's available at the new address and they provide the phone line, not BT?)
Sorry for all the questions, but if there's anybody in the know I'd be grateful for some advice!
Thanks
Claire

No matter which broadband supplier you go with you'll only get a speed dependent on how far you live from the exchange & the age of the drop wire.If the checker says you can only get between 1.5 & 4mb,then that's all you'll get.
Put your phone number or postcode in the link below & it'll tell you what speed you can get on the various options available. (ADSL/ADSL+/Infinity)
