I thought this already happened, it definitely does if the threads are marked as spam...0

Thank you vuvuzela, I'll remember that if there is a next time.
Last nights were pretty nasty and in the end I stopped reading certain parts of the site as I didn't want to lose my temper and say something I regret later. The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.0 -
i think people would abuse it and just click on anything they dont like or dont agree with0

I was thinking of this the other night after one particular repulsive thread I stumbled upon - really upsetting.
I wondered if some of the older / regular posters - I dunno, say over 10,000 post count or something, could volunteer to have mild MOD access, and when there are no official MODs around, they could perhaps be authorised to 'suspend' threads, until there was an official MOD around. Offensive threads could then be removed permanently but non-offensive ones (in the opinions of the MODS) could simply be reinstated at the earliest opportunity.0 -

or weight the Reports so that, if x number of posters who total 100,000 posts between them hit Report, the thread gets suspended automatically until reviewed.
If everyone assumes Mod will do something then everyone will do nothing.
Also a more detailed categorisation of reports would be helpful, rather than just an 'unacceptable' category.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
I've been using the MSE forums for years and I actually assumed this already happened; however that could be to do with the fact that I tend to surf here at work on most normal days (i.e. a time period when mods are going to be active - week days during office hours).
I'm active on another forum where the forum software has been set up like this - it works very well in practice (although I suspect the thresholds have been set to very high, as would be needed here).0 -

A combination for weighting of:
count of reporters
total post count of reporters
post count of poster / thread starter (newbie alert)
naughty /controversial word count (wider than swear words, word list may need fairly frequent review to take into account topical issues)
would probably be fairly accurate.
It would also be interesting to know (in general terms) if the number of reports affects the speed of Mod review. If there's no 'out-of-hours' mechanism for Mod review then a malicious poster could very quickly swamp the board with posts.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

Yes, and just being a compulsive poster with a high post count doesn't mean that you're necessarily a good person or intelligent or fit to judge threads or posters.
Several posters with high post counts have been banned recently due to unacceptable and or unwanted behaviour.
The problem with vigilante squads and kangaroo courts is that they tend to be mindless and often illogical and unfair and predicated by personal agendas and prejudices.
I think the current level of censorship is fine. The small amount of filth and bullying and trolling are generally deleted within a day or two - or week or two - and that's all that's necessary. And the persistent bullies and rude, provocative, offensive, nuisance people sooner or later get their come uppance and get binned. And that's about right.
And when you come on a chat board, just like going down a pub or a club, you have to be aware of the fact that you're deliberately parading yourself to the great unwashed public in all their glory. So you have to bear in mind that there'll be some of the usual rough and tumble that your average bunch of members of the public do. So don't complain, if you don't like the behaviour of the general public then don't put yourself in their way. And that's it. Simples.
If you dumb it down too much and flatten out everything then you run the risk of killing off the energy. Too much censorship can be as bad as not enough.0 -
