Giff Gaff or international sim

Hi
I've managed to get hold of an unlocked phone and now need a sim that I can use for 6 months travelling (mainly South America, NZ and Asia). I only really need the phone for peace of mind, to send/receive txt and to only make calls in an emergency. So don't need any data.
What sim should I go for. Having looked through a few posts Giff Gaff crops up a lot - will that be ok for international use. Or should I get an international sim.
Any advice would be most welcome
Thanks:T

GiffGaff is O2 UK network .

For emergencies and receiving texts any UK PAYG card with enabled roaming is fine, including giffgaff.
If is worth checking the roaming coverage for exotic countries. For giffgaff it is http://support.giffgaff.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/456
Prices for making/receiving calls and sending texts can be different at UK providers and are likely to be lower with some international sim.0 -
You could try a dual sim option of receiving on uk sim and calling on international this way your cost will remain low.0

There are a good number of International SIM offerings - that usually have Swiss SIM cards, but a much lower cost for calls, data and SMS. They are all pre-pay. Just do a web search.0
