Not sure exactly how you're going to prove the person trying it on actually marked it - unless you're going to have a mutual inspection of all clobber with the potential purchaser before letting it go into the changing room.

Neither am I sure how you could 'make them pay' for the item if it comes out marked. Infuriating, YES, but doubt there's much you can do about it - nothing customer friendly anyway.

Totally agree. A sign reminding people that scarves are provided to try to limit damage might help. But charging people or any other action after the event is out of the question. And if you can't enforce something, please don't have a sign saying that you'll try. It's lame.

I feel for you though, OP. It's really annoying. Deodorant stains too! Every time I try something tight and dark-coloured on, it's always got white marks down each side!

i think something along the lines of "Please use the scarves to avoid makeup stains, thank you" in the cubicle along with a notice on the counter explaining the consequences and that it's necessary to avoid adding extra onto the price of the clothing to recoup the expenses.

  • I'm guessing you are a high end store you have someone at the changing rooms when they are in use to assist customers should they need it and check what they take out/bring in?

I think it's fair to check collars and neck lines before the customer takes it in and brings it back out. Surely the customer spending lots of money on items don't want them marked in the first place?

A sign saying something like "Please use the scarves provided to avoid transfering make up onto any items you are trying on. Failure to do so, and marking clothes will result in you having to buy them"

..............and how will the store enforce that - in ANY way, let alone a cost effective one!
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
  • I think the worst experience I had of this was trying on sample wedding dresses - it actually marred my view of what I was buying; I couldn't believe how careless these women were and found it disgusting. Wonder if any of them actually bought a sample dress afterward and complained, lol!

The advice above is good - short of checking each item before it goes in, and putting up visible notices the only thing I can suggest is when they want to change, escort them to the changing room (so they feel that personal touch) and remind them of the scarf.
  • Thanks all we already do escort everyone to a fitting room we do point out the scarves and politely mention they are for make wearers to protect the clothing
However some still choose to ignore that :-(
    We will go for

We would like all our customers to enjoy our ranges in pristine condition
Please use the scarves provided to avoid transfering make up onto the items you are trying
    Thank you

But if the polite ask and the polite note don't work god knows what's left

    Thanks for all your answers
