People leaving make up on clothing polite rant

Options
Hi

Where I work we provide scarves in the changing rooms for people to put over the face when trying on tight items with small head space ie.. polo neck sweaters etc..
Sadly despite us mentioning politely could they please use the scarf provided many don't
We now think a small polite sign in the changing rooms will have to go up next the hook with the scarf on
(yes we do realise that not everyone knows that a scarf in the fitting is for make up wearers)
But we are high end and have had hundreds of pounds of product spoilt, lipstick is almost impossible for cleaners to get out and at these prices we can't wash them and then re sell as new and much is dry cleaning only

Any ideas on wording that won't offend ?
Maybe something polite and or funny ?
Are we able to charge for cleaning or damage if they then don't use the scarves ?

Thanks all

I think a notice is a good idea as I wouldn't automatically realise what the scarf was for. I'd probably think someone had forgotten it!

Pleas use the scarf provided to prevent make-up stains.

The only thing that comes to my mind is -"Please don't leave panda eyes on the merchandise. Thank you!" ;)

Torry's suggestion is probably more suitable though.

How about a take on the notice in china shops, lovely to look at and lovely to try but if you mark it you will have to buy.

"Please take extra care trying on items if you are wearing make-up - some types can leave traces on the collars! A scarf is provided for your convenience in these cases" or similar.

"Don't let your slap earn you a slap" is another polite way of putting it.

And add....'customers found to have left make-up marks on clothes will consider the item theirs and will be charged accordingly'.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Ooh no. I hate those little rhyming ditties - make me cringe.

Short and to the point is needed, I think. And don't try to be funny.

    I think this is better.

  • I'm so glad to see that someone who works in retail is taking steps to stop this from happening! This is a huge pet hate, and it really annoys me how selfish and ignorant people can be. I found a lovely white dress in New Look last week and when I tried it on I found that it had foundation marks on it. I went back to find another in my size with no luck, but did find yet more make-up marks on the other dresses. I do prefer to wash clothes before I wear them, but that shouldn't be the point, they should come out the shop in BRAND NEW condition and ready to wear.

Could the assistant manning the changing room area not just give them out when people go in? I'd not allow people to use the changing rooms unless they used the scarves, but I'm just a grumpy cow and I imagine you'd lose customers doing that :rotfl:
  • Not sure exactly how you're going to prove the person trying it on actually marked it - unless you're going to have a mutual inspection of all clobber with the potential purchaser before letting it go into the changing room.

Neither am I sure how you could 'make them pay' for the item if it comes out marked. Infuriating, YES, but doubt there's much you can do about it - nothing customer friendly anyway.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
