tv licence fine

Hi everyone
I have just had a TV Licence guy come to the door and give me a caution.
My mum has always paid this for me but apparently she has not paid it for about 18 months.
I can't talk to her about it because she is abroad, I realise I'm an adult and should be paying for this myself or at least making sure that it has been getting paid but I haven't.....

I'm a single mum and I gave up my job about a month ago as I was finishing work at 6.30pm and was finding it difficult not seeing my daughter until that time of night as she is only 6.

I was at work for a year and a half and the benefits I was on before seem to have been a lot more than I have now. I am living in a private rented house which is 550 pcm and get £410 housing benefit. Just wondering if there are any other people on benefits and how they live because I am finding it impossible and I also have many debts.

If anyone can give me any advice on whats going to happen now with the TV licence fine or advice on living on benefits would much appreciated sorry for rambling on...

Hey honey...You know this happened to me I thought our landlord was paying it and when the TV licence guy came round he told me he'd cautioned me and that they were sending a letter when I received it it said that as i'd brought one straight away I wasn't going to be fined this time....Have they said you will be fined for definite? or was it just a caution?

The key is to get it sorted out quickly. I've known people to be let off a fine at the Magistrates Court if they were able to show that they'd just bought a licence

You can start a payment plan for £5.60 per week

  • thanks for the replys He just gave me a caution with the whole anything you say will be given in evidence bit, he also wrote down the make of my TV and that i had sky and an xbox...

I still cant get hold of my mum so still not sure if I already have one but after what you have said I'm going to get one tomorrow.

Luckily for me my nan is going to lend me the money as I don't have that sort of money to hand.

apparently I haven't had one since may 2010 and have heard lots of storys about non payment of TV Licence so was worrying a little.

  • My friend works till midnight two weeks out of four.
Consequently she doesn't see her six month old baby much during that time as he is in nursery during the day time until her hubby collects him.

And you gave up work as you thought 6.30 was late?
Millions of us have had to face not seeing our children as much as we'd like in order to work to keep a roof over their heads.

    Are you winding us up?

As you said above your friends husband picks her child up from nursery.

Do you think if she had no family and no husband that she would be able to work till midnight?? I was very lucky getting childcare till 6.30pm and did it for a year and a half.

I'm sorry if you don't like what I said but dropping my daughter off at school at 8.30am and not seeing her till nearly 7.00pm at night was really not fair on her or me so I chose to spend time with my daughter because as I said before she has no other family.

I am currently looking for work but to finish a bit earlier. We are a lot worse off now I must admit but I am hoping it will be temporary.

    You have just been HAD
Sorry but you have, you will have just signed a contract admitting you have breeched a statute.
You had the legal right not to give this TV Guy your name or confirm any details whatsoever.
    Hard Luck this time
But if you are ever in that position again, remember
No name = No contract = No Fine.

I was a single parent too. I worked full time and had a 50 mile round trip to work and back. I had no family nearby either. It was horrendous at times but I knew a life on benefits wasn't for me and the longer I remained working the greater chance I had of betterment.
Your daughter will be back at school this week so you won't be spending the daytime with her either. I really don't see you logic.
I hope you find work with suitable hours soon before your financial situation worsens.

All this chit chatle will not help your situation one bit, buy a licence, tell them how hard up and confused you were.
You are in a legal situation now, they DO NOT DO EXCUSES !

First Question, Did you sign anything and if so WHY ?

  • I know they don't do excuses, I am aware this is down to me and for me to sort out. I'm just explaining how it came about.

Anyway yes I did sign something the reason I signed it was because I haven't been in any situation like this before so I just signed I have never had bailiffs or anything like that happen before so I just did as I was told tbh.

I know it wasn't the smartest thing to do I was just put on the spot, but I can't change it now but I know for the future not to sign anything.
