Up until last year I was still using a 200Mhz Pentium with 196Mb RAM as my web server for developing websites on, and file storage.
Old computers aren't useless! It's actually quite surprising when you put a fresh OS on them; you expect them to be much slower than they actually are.

    512MB RAM. That's loads. :) I'm expecting closer to 256MB RAM.

    Where is that OP? :D

oh i know but i had some spare just sitting on a shelf, but as stated Lubuntu can run on 128mb of ram so shouldnt be too much of a problem
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Hi sorry have been away. Thanks for the all the replies - the machine is very basic - I did think about putting xp on it but when I checked the system has only 56mb RAM. It's a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion Authentic AMD with AMD-K6(TM) 3d processor. I think what I may end up doing is just seeing if I can buy a cheap used one off ebay. Don't have much cash to spare but daughter keeps asking to go on the internet and I am reluctant to let her use mine just in case she presses something she shouldn't and I can't then sort it out!!! That is really why I wanted something basic & cheap for her.
  • That's one computer that needs to be recycled - no good flogging a dead horse! Very wise to get one for your daughter as kids and computers and cause huge problems. Why don't you try and find a computer on Freecycle? Saying that, I have difficulty even in giving away old machines in working order - it's so annoying.

    ....HP Pavilion 6430 AMD-K6 266 MHz, 64MB of PC100 SDRAM....

By the time you have purchased more RAM and an Ethernet card...

    You could try Puppy Linux.

Looks like eBay is the way.

Hi thanks again for all the replies I think it's ebay here I come!!!
  • Try Freecycle for a free machine, and if you want to pay there is GumTree and Preloved. Whatever you end up with don't forget to configure 'Parental Controls'

Why not install something like Returnil System Safe and let your daughter use your computer.

That way nothing she does will mess up your system permanently - just reboot after she has been browsing and everything is returned to its original state.

Your computer is protected and you don't have to buy another machine.
