in Techie Stuff
Hi just wondered if someone could possibly help. I have an old hard drive with windows 98 and I am trying to set up my young daughter to access internet. I have a realtek RTL8191SU which I am trying to install without much success. I try to run the installation and am told "sorry please run as administrator". Can someone point me in the right direction. I might add that I am completely useless at computer techie stuff!!!!
many thanks

AFAIK there is no Administrator mode in Windows 98, every user is an administrator.
I suspect the problem is that your driver is not compatible with win 98 the earliest driver I found was for Win2K, which is almost 14 years old. Has the machine got a network connector that you could use?
P.S. The adapter also needs USB2.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

I don't see any drivers for Windows 98 for that WiFi adaptor - I don't think you'll get it to work.0 -
Can't you use it wired instead, latest wireless encryption standards aren't supported with 98!!

i know you say you are not good with techie stuff but do you know the specs of the system.
i only ask because (although i know people will moan) i feel you might be better installing a low requirements version of Linux - even more so if the system is only going to be used to access the internet (although a low spec system might struggle with flash) Linux Mint LXDE or Lubuntu would be my initial suggestions however will depend on the system - it really isnt that difficult to install although some people always come along with horror stories, i have never had any troubleDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -

Despite his name the man is not such a muppet,It may pay you to download a version of Linux that will run from either a Cd or a USB , just to test out the water it only costs the time to download, and a blank cd .
You state you have an old hard drive , but what is it inside ?4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -
This is something that I've just been playing around with. I was given an old 2001 Advent computer by a well meaning friend. Normally I would just dump it but thought I would experiment. It had Windows Millenium Edition and hadn't been on the internet since 2003 - it had an old dial up modem so I replaced that with a LAN card. It still wouldn't connect so I then plugged in a USB wireless adapter and that wouldn't connect either. I then loaded XP on it just to see what would happen and that did work with both wired and wireless. Problem was that the hardware was such low spec that it was not up to running XP very well. Next I tried Linux Mint but it wouldn't load for some odd reason. Next I tried Ubuntu and it loaded OK and the built in drivers work with both wired and wireless. I installed .75Gb of SD Ram and it works quite well - ideal for somebody using it for the internet and even school work. I decided to use Chromium as the browser and it's quite capable.
A good result that could be replicated on your old machine.0 -

It doesn't work because you do not have a Driver for Windows 98. You won't find one.
Burt there are Linux Drivers available, so that is an avenue that you could follow. Though I doubt that you will get decent performance from anything other than the likes of Puppy Linux Wary Puppy or similar.
Another option is Windows Fundamentals...

But this machine has Windows 98. We don't even know if even the Special Edition. So you can expect considerably lower spec than your 2001 machine. Ubuntu will run like a two legged dog on it.
I would expect PC100 or PC133 at best. Perhaps you can max out the board with 256MB RAM.0 -
Send it to africa and buy something better on ebay.0
