Do you mean a local sim?

Using another network’s SIM in a Tesco Mobile phone
If you wish to use another network's SIM, you will need to arrange for it be unlocked. If this is the case, you must not insert another operator's SIM card into the mobile without an unlatching code (this is not your PIN code).

Our Customer Care team can provide you with an unlatching code. The service is free if you request an unlatching code from us, 12 months after the date you activated your handset. If you activated your Tesco Mobile phone less than 12 months ago, we will charge you a fee of £20 to unlock your handset.
    ....
Pay as you go handsets (excluding iPhone)
Pay as you go handsets are free to unlock 12 months after activation. If you’d like to unlock your handset, but activated less than 12 months ago, then there’s a £20 charge to unlock it.
    ...

    Pay monthly handsets (including iPhone)
Our Pay monthly handsets are free to unlock at the end of the contract. If you’d like to unlock your handset before the end of your contract, then there’s a £20 charge to unlock it.
For more information on the qualifying period, terms and conditions and applicable charges, please contact the Customer Care team
Alternatively just buy an unlocked spare handset for £3+£10 (minus quidco/TCB)

You can unlock it yourself. Costs a pound or two.

I used http://www.freemyblackberry.com to unlock my 8900. Took about 24 hours to receive the free unlocking code with mep number, takes about 48 hours without mep number.

As mentioned above, the MEP number is needed.
Hence why I asked if you had the datacable.
(It is a simple 1 click operation to read the MEP)
Blackberry codes are instant, regardless of whether you have the MEP or not.
Only difference is - if you dont have the MEP, you get 5 unlock codes, and you have to try them all as only 1 is correct.
