Teachers arent allowed red pens here.. they use green or a pencil crayon.. red is a negative colour associated with anger and therefore damaging to a childs emotional wellbeing apparently.

I had a lecturer at nautical college who loved to vent about how he couldnt use red pens anymore because it was an angry colour and might upset us!

...I'll also speak up on some things, I know it's a money saving board, but sometimes it's best to avoid being too frugal, good quality pens & pencils in the long term are more viable than their cheaper counterparts and will install an idea in his head for the future, I would recommend some of the cheaper "permanent" pens (Parkers I swear by and have one in my pocket as I type) over any random ball point pen any day of the week. While they're a bit more expensive (should be able to pick them up from about £3) a good quality pen will last longer than the no doubt dozen or so biro's he'll chew through or have burst in his pocket, if he looks after it a good pen will last him years & only need refilling perhaps 3-4 times a year.

Don't get nice pens like Parker ones for taking to school. My mum did this for me. Of course, it got nicked. The poor lady would get me another to replace it, which would get nicked... I'm sure this can and does happen even in the poshest of schools, or at the very least he will lose or break it.

Agree with advice on the calculators, wait until the school tells you which one to buy and get that one. I was one of the ones who for some reason had a different model, a right PITA it was!
  • As a school girl I loved getting my OWN stuff together and would have hated it if my mum got it all sorted for me. Of course there wasn't a lot of fancy / silly stuff around in those far off days, so no risk of buying something unsuitable.
I agee with those who said wait a few days before getting a calculator as the school will have its own preferred type.

I'm at college and I have all that stuff, including the pencil case. Guess where my stuff ends up? Bottom of the bag. Not even been there a week yet...
At work, I have all my stuff in a pencil case, one that belonged to my 8yo DD who owns tons of them. Why? Because I work with mainly men and because I am part-time before I got it you could guarantee that someone would 'borrow' my stuff inbetween me leaving work and going in the following morning or on my day off, but putting it in a very girly lilac, 'cute' pencil case scares the bejeezus out of them and they stay out of it. :D Ideally, I'd have liked one that was emblazoned with sanitary product logos cos that would have ensured they stayed away. :rotfl::rotfl:

Mine starts Secondary on Monday and though I was given a long list to order from which included calculator and USB stick, and different grade pencils, sketch books, and display folders I've lost the form.:o

What I do have though is a smaller list that says for maths lessons mine needs
    Essential
    HB Pencil
    Black Pen
    30cm Ruler
    Rubber
    Sharpener
    Protractor
    Pair of Compasses
    Scientific Calculator

    Recommended
    Highlighter
    Glue Stick
    Pencil Crayons.

Ds starts his new secondary school next week and he needs to take a pencil case. They didn't need them at their old school so I wondering if anyone had anyone had any good suggestions on what he might need so I don't over/under fill.

    Thanks :)

not too much, it will all be stolen.

    keep most at home,

leave the pencil case with one pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, pencil sharpner, maths teacher will say what is expected, same as art teacher, don't even get a posh/nice case, someone will have it, just basic cheap but working.

pens only get nicked if you leave them in the pencil case - a pen like that lives in your pocket when it's not being used!

You must have had a really poor experience, I'm sorry for that.

OP not all state secondary schools are like that - and I have never worked in a particularly middle class school.

Don't get red pens :( I'm a teacher and we mark with them so if kids are using red pens too to make things "stand out" it actually just gets in the way as our corrections cannot be so easily seen. Green is better.

Our school marks in green, so same would apply.

mine are not allowed tippex either..something about it being solvent based and sniffed to get high.. Amusing when they excluded 5 boys in the space of 3 weeks for selling weed on site lol..

    At least they were excluded.

Well, then maybe I'll change my advice to "see what colour the school wants to mark in and then get the other colour" :p

They were.. but then they sold it outside the gates and the school could do nothing apparently. 3 of them are in prison now 4 years later and 1 was released a few weeks ago :( the 5th died in a car accident a couple of years ago.. :(
